WCW Comic Book Reading Club: Issue One, Page 17

    • WCW Comic Book Reading Club: Issue One, Page 17

WCW: The Comic Book was published in the early 90s by Marvel Comics. Nobody in wrestling or comics paid it much attention, and after 12 issues, it was cancelled and lost to the ages. Until now.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, @tomblackett will post a new page of the WCW comic with his comments and we’ll read through it together. We’ll be there for each other, through the good (Vader! The Steiners! Sting! Cactus Jack!) and the (Johnny B.) Badd.

WCW: The Comic (Issue One, Page 17)

WCW: The Comic is probably the property of Marvel Comics / WWE, though I’m not entirely sure. This website makes no claims to own it; all panels and images are posted in the spirit of fair use and are the property of their respective owners and creators.

Tom: Fair warning: this is a rough page for Ron Simmons, with Diamond Studd and Johnny B. Badd just RELENTLESSLY beating down on him in a way that makes you wonder if Mel Gibson wasn’t the writer.

Diamond Studd also talks at length for the first time, showing some surprisingly fascistic inclinations (while also giving the lifeless corpse of kayfabe another swift boot as he berates Ron for turning face):

When you’re… dictator? Huh? It’s just wrestling, guy! You get a belt, some extra cash and maybe a trophy, but that’s kind of it. What are you expecting here? What’s your gameplan?

      • Win battle royal.
      • Beat Lex Luger to become WCW Champion.
      • ?????
      • Become dictator and ban Ron Simmons from wrestling.

It’s not the worst plan in the world, but that third step could probably use a little more thought!

We also see Studd and Badd (possible tag team name: The Superfluous D Connection) putting the boots to Simmons and Sting while giving the usual supervillain speech:

Yeah yeah yeah, alright guys, we get it. You’re just a dark reflection of society and being bad is human nature and all the rest of it. Will these generically evil villains win? Will the Diamond Studd become dictator? Find out on Monday! Maybe!
