This Or That: Tag Teams Edition (7/15/2014)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlargh will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. Better bad-ass tag team: The Road Warriors or The Steiner Brothers?

Which bad-ass tag team do you prefer?

Tim:

The Road Warriors had a good look and bad-ass personas at the time but in-ring I didn’t care too much and still don’t. I love Steiner Brothers matches and will say they’re higher up in my imaginary “favorite tag-teams of all time” list. Scott Steiner was always a fun watch and how could you not like a wrestler named The Dog-Faced Gremlin?! That’s way better than “Hawk” or “Animal.”

The Steiner Brothers are my favorite ’90s tag team and I’m basically using this question to showcase my love for them. That’s what happens when you purchase a domain name, kids! The Steiners had everything I loved about wrestling. From brawling with intensity to flashy moves from the top rope, Rick and Scott gave us both the appeal of intense brawls and impressive wrestling bouts.

I enjoyed The Road Warriors/LOD enough but they never really connected with me probably due to the fact that I missed their prime and I don’t believe you can truly understand how good a wrestler was unless you live through it. I do vividly remember marking out when The Steiners beat the NWO for the tag team titles at Souled Out 1997. One of my favorite things about the WWE Network (when it actually works for me) is reliving old Steiners tag matches. Best tag team of all time!

I missed out on the peak years of Los Bros Steiner so I don’t really have an awful lot of affection for them, although watching young Scott in his early years and seeing if you can spot any Big Poppa Pumpisms is pretty good fun. Oh, and I enjoyed seeing the Steiners get hit with trays of snacks by Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton dressed as concession sellers in the WCW Comic (RIP WCW Comic Book Reading Club, you were too much work and not consistently funny enough).

I wasn’t a huge Road Warriors/Legion of Doom guy either, but I did like the shoulder pads, facepaint and how creative they were with using their hairstyles to hide their bald patches.

Better Attitude Era tag team: Edge and Christian or The Hardy Boyz?

We remember the ’90s – do you?

Tim:

I really never got into The Hardy Boyz. I liked their crazy matches but they didn’t really captivate me. When Christian and Edge started being a comedy tag team with entertaining matches on their hands and crazy antics, I was instantly a life-long fan of both men. They had such a great chemistry. During The Attitude Era, you would not find me rooting against Edge and Christian in any scenario.

This one is difficult but I’m gonna side with Edge and Christian. If I had to pick one of the four wrestlers at the time, it probably would be Jeff Hardy due to the graceful high spots off ladders and his wacky hair. My preference of Edge and Christian as a team has to do with their charisma.

The antics, bits and promos they’d provide were always a laugh. Both teams were incredible in the ring but E & C giving us the 5 second pose, kazoos, goofy accessories, the original Best Friends with Kurt Angle and so much more outside of the ring, I’d have to give the nod to Edge and Christian.

I played as the Hardys more on WWF No Mercy (there are few things more satisfying than landing a swanton bomb from the ladder to someone laying on the announce table), so let’s go for them. That’s all there is to it sometimes!

Superkicks, dives and sexy hair – which team do you like best?

Tim:

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO ANSWER THIS? Why would you do this to me?! I’m going to have to resort to semantics here and highlight the term “high-flying.” The Motor City Machine Guns are my favorite tag team of all time but I don’t think of them as “high-flying” like I do The Young Bucks. I think The Young Bucks are the best tag team when it comes to being “high-flying.”

My two favorite tag teams of the modern era by far, The Young Bucks are the better team due to body of work in that they’ve been together longer and will continue to be together always putting on stellar matches but I’m still picking the Motor City Machine Guns.

Around 2007-2008, I started to fall out of love with wrestling for the first time in my life. The things that changed that mostly were Bryan Danielson and The Motor City Machine Guns. Seeing Sabin and Shelley together was pure poetry in that ring. Every move, every mannerism, every match, every hairstyle left me captivated. I even stand by them after Alex Shelley never shipped my purchased MCMG t-shirt and Chris Sabin shaved his head. MCMG 4 life!

GOD FUCKING DAMN IT TIM. So, here’s an inside look at the This Or That process – Joey tends to come up with the questions and set the post out and then I’ll add the pictures and polls and make some other little edits. For this one, I decided to try and add a theme to the teams in each question. While the first two were easy enough, it was weirdly hard to come up with a short phrase that summed up the kind of teams the Bucks and the Machine Guns are.

I settled on “high-flying”, despite it sounding really awkward and ill-fitting, and Little Timmy Smartypants immediately honed in on this. YEAH, “HIGH-FLYING” IS UNSPEAKABLY LAME AND INACCURATE AND SOUNDS LIKE A STUPID CHARACTER CLASS FROM WWE 2K14. I KNOW. I KNOW. I BLEW IT.

What should I have said? “Better super rad tag team in long tights”? “Better tag team that deserved better from their runs in TNA”? Forget it. Just forget it. God, I hate myself.

Anyway, I like the Young Bucks, they are good.

Better sitcom soulmates: Jim and Pam from The Office or Troy and Abed from Community?

The greatest romance in sitcom history or Jim and Pam from The Office?

Tim:

I would like to say Troy and Abed because they are so hilariously adorable together but my heart can’t go against the Jim and Pam story. It’s my favorite TV love-fest ever and it happened on my favorite TV comedy ever. I have to stand by that.

My two favorite television shows of all time leads this to be a tough decision. Jim and Pam were a flawless pairing but poor Rashida Jones had to go undergo heartbreak for it to happen. Who did Troy and Abed ever hurt? Jeff Winger’s Netflix account doesn’t count. Also, I own a snazzy baseball style “Troy and Abed In The Morning” shirt that I’ll wear to my grave.

“High-flying”, holy shit, what was I thinking. ANYWAY, moving on. I thought the Jim and Pam storyline was unbelievably well done for the most part, especially given how long it went for – it could be a little grating and the efforts to add some drama and threat in the last couple of seasons felt pretty artificial, but they remained likeable.

However, Troy and Abed are untouchable. The ‘bromance’ phenomenon in pop culture became unspeakably annoying for a year or two, but Troy and Abed somehow managed to rise above it and remain the most enjoyable double act on television (well, aside from during season four, but I think we can all agree to wipe that from our collective memories). Hopefully Donald Glover comes back for an episode or two in season six, coming to your Internet web browsers via the fabulous Yahoo search engine in 2015, probably.
