WCW Comic Book Reading Club: Issue Two, Page 18

    • WCW Comic Book Reading Club: Issue Two, Page 18

WCW: The Comic Book was published in the early 90s by Marvel Comics. Nobody in wrestling or comics paid it much attention, and after 12 issues, it was cancelled and lost to the ages. Until now.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, @tomblackett will post a new page of the WCW comic with his comments and we’ll read through it together. We’ll be there for each other, through the good (Vader! The Steiners! Sting! Cactus Jack!) and the (Johnny B.) Badd.

WCW: The Comic (Issue Two, Page 18)

WCW: The Comic is probably the property of Marvel Comics / WWE, though I’m not entirely sure. This website makes no claims to own it; all panels and images are posted in the spirit of fair use and are the property of their respective owners and creators.

Tom: The panel of Lex Luger hitting El Gigante in the legs with a chair while The Computerized Announcer of the ’90s, Terrence Taylor yells ‘CANCEL CHRISTMAS!’ is just incredible:

This whole page is a real return to form for the WCW comic after we were lost in the wilderness of Luger’s feud with Ron Simmons for so long.

There’s some inconsistency with the chair shot sound effects – so it’s ‘THWAPT’ if you hit the guy while he’s standing, and ‘BWAK’ if you get him while he’s on the canvas? Maybe that’s accurate though, I dunno. I never claimed to be some kind of sound genius guy.

We also get to see some of our favourite mid-carders return, in the form of Big Josh, Flyin’ Brian Pillman and (YES YES YES) P.N. NEWS:

There’s something a little off about P.N. though. They’ve always struggled to get his skin tone right, but rather than going too dark, this time they’ve turned him into a racist Asian caricature from the ;40s:

Is this racist? The answer to that question is almost always ‘definitely yes’, so let’s just play it safe and go with that.
