Wednesday Night Wars: July 22, 2015
There’s a lot of wrestling on Wednesday nights.
Every week, @JoeySplashwater will attempt to watch as much of the wrestling programs on Wednesday night as he can. There will be a short recap of each program followed by the pick for Match of the Night, Performer of the Night and who won the Wednesday Night Wars?
NXT
Full Sail somehow found a way to become more obnoxious with booing all mentions of the NXT TakeOver show because it’s a part of Summerslam weekend in New York as well as going over the top creating Cena-like “Let’s Go Eva/Eva Sucks” chants for Eva Marie. It’s one thing if those chants happen naturally or was dictated by the show but they obviously planned it out. The Impact Zone 2.0 has been going overboard for a while but this recent set of tapings may be when most realize it.
The show was pretty lackluster at best with the only noteworthy moments coming from a Finn Balor and Kevin Owens promo. Bayley had a solid return as well and set up her road to the Women’s Title. The rest of the show was pretty basic and it’s becoming more and more difficult to watch in full.
Grade: C
ROH
I didn’t bother watching it as a “clip show” seems pretty silly and the “ODB comedy match” main eventing the show is absolutely not for me. Seems like a very poor decision especially in the week leading up to a PPV.
Grade: N/A
Lucha Underground
Good episode that sets up the two week long season finale “Ultimo Lucha” being treated like the promotion’s Wrestlemania. There were nice showcases of Prince Puma and Fenix leading up to their respective matches in the finale. The matches weren’t anything special but the segments were very well done, especially the last scene between Puma and Mil Muertes.
It’s absolutely mind blowing how Ricochet exudes such emotion with the mask compared to without it in PWG and EVOLVE. The final segment and the overall show gave me excitement for the next two weeks of Lucha Underground. They’ve given us a special show and hopefully the finale closes it out in deserving fashion.
Grade: B+
Impact Wrestling
Velvet Sky promised to Stone Cold Stun all transgender people watching. Bully Ray called them all pussies who killed the radio star. The Harris Brothers threatened everyone. What a night.
Grade: No
Match of the Night
N/A
Every match was perfectly mundane. By default, maybe Fenix vs. a bunch of a jobbers would have been the best.
Performer of the Night
Prince Puma
Seriously. Are we sure it’s Ricochet?
Who won the Wednesday Night Wars?
Lucha Underground
Lucha Underground didn’t have any must see matches this week but it made the next two weeks become must see shows, the ultimate goal with their season coming to an end in grand form.
