This Or That (11/11/2014)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlargh will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

Who was better as a general manager/commissioner of WWE?

Tim:

Steve Austin never seemed right as the GM to me. He had some funny moments but it seemed against character in a few ways not to mention he was still probably the most entertaining part of the show every week and could easily overshadow many of the active wrestlers. Mick Foley was fun and brought an enjoyable vibe to the show. It is always nice to have a face authority figure and I believe Mick Foley was one of the best.

Steve Austin was entertaining as co-GM with Eric Bischoff but his personality and star power would overtake the show. Mick Foley did an excellent job at being endearing and adding some entertaining segments but was just a guy who happened to be commish.

I’d say Foley was the best authority figure WWE had in the baby face role. When I watch 2003 RAW episodes or PPV’s, I look out for Austin segments. When I watch 2001 WWE content, I forget Foley was the Commissioner and am greeted with some pleasant memories.

I was having a sabattical from wrestling while Stone Cold was Raw’s sheriff, though from what I’ve seen, it seems like it made for some great moments. However, Mick Foley’s run as commissioner was unbeatable and that period still stands as my favourite in WWE history. If I had to pick one of them to come back to be commish these days though, I’d have to go for ol’ Stone Cold – I really enjoy his new ‘podcast dad’ persona, whereas Foley can be a little cringey sometimes.

Who did WWE miss out on more: Ricochet or AJ Styles?

AJ Styles is dominating in Japan. Ricochet is dominating the indies and Lucha Underground. Which snubbed talent did WWE miss out on more this year?

Tim:

AJ Styles has always been something special but this year really drove the point home that he is one of the best. I don’t think many deserve to be on the biggest stage quite like Styles but unfortunately it doesn’t seem like it’ll ever be in the cards. At the end of the day though, I think Ricochet could develop into a huge star if placed under the WWE system. I don’t necessarily find him likeable but he is very gifted and could go a long ways if WWE were to invest in him long-term.

Ricochet is very good but AJ Styles is great. The fact that WWE didn’t have space for one of the best wrestlers in the world when the roster is at such weak in depth is mind boggling. In 2014, Styles re-established himself as one of the premiere in ring performers in the world. The year would have been better in WWE with him. I don’t think there’s anyone in WWE that’s a better worker than him right now other than a healthy Daniel Bryan and maybe Seth Rollins.

It’s always been really hard for me to picture AJ Styles in WWE – before, it was because he was so dyed-in-the-wool TNA but now, it’s because he seems to have hit a new peak and I can’t imagine what a repackaged AJ would be and it’d be a shame for him to have to be broken down and reassembled in NXT when he’s doing such great work.

I’d also argue that WWE has yet to ‘miss out’ on Ricochet. I think he’s really good and definitely ready to be brought in, but he’s still so comparitively young that I think it’s only a matter of time before he’s brought in. I also think he’d benefit from a repackaging – as good as his matches are, he still hasn’t really clicked with me in terms of becoming a ‘must-see’ guy.

Who do you care more about: Bray Wyatt or Luke Harper?

Which original Wyatt Family member are you more invested in right now?

Tim:

I don’t care one bit about Bray Wyatt anymore. The character is a great idea and he’s good at the delivery but he’s entering a Kane-like territory for me where I hate when someone I care about has to feud with him. His words are meaningless and everything just seems repetitive. Luke Harper has a bright future ahead of him and it seems like they might be heading in a good direction with him. I’m at least more curious and hopeful when it comes to Luke Harper.

I still think Bray Wyatt has something special but his promos/character since returning has lost me to the point where I have less than zero interest in Wyatt vs. Dean Ambrose. Luke Harper’s singles push starting on RAW with his aligning with The Authority is one of the rare bright spots on the show. I’m excited to see what happens with Harper in the near future. He’s been one of the top 3 in ring WWE performers this year.

It really feels like Bray Wyatt’s just stumbled from one disappointing feud to another for the longest time – I still think he has an awful lot of potential but it doesn’t seem like The Fed has cracked the code to make him work as a character. I’m super duper lollipops excited for Luke Harper being given a go as a singles guy. He’s definitely one of the company’s more interesting guys to watch and it’ll be really interesting to see what they do with him.

Which film do you think will be better: Interstellar or The Hunger Games: Mockingjay?

Tim:

I saw the first Hunger Games film and it was okay. I do NOT want to see Interstellar because I’m not a fan of lame self-serious nerd shit for idiot geeks so I guess MockingJay? This makes me feel out of the loop and pretty weird. Good job, Brad.

I know nothing about Interstellar and likely will never see it. I have the first Hunger Games on my Netflix queue and still will likely never see any of the films.

I think Hunger Games would be better because Interstellar is 3 hours long and Christopher Nolan directed The Dark Knight Rises. (I still love you, Inception.)

ATTENTION TROLLS, I’VE ALREADY SEEN INTERSTELLAR AND I WAS THOROUGHLY BORED FOR MOST OF THAT FILM SO I’M DEFFO NOT PICKING THAT. I really liked Catching Fire after not really giving much of a fuck about the first Hunger Games film BUT the splitting up of any series’ final movie into two films is one Hollywood trend that I really don’t care much for as it usually results in one super-boring film and one film that is ALRIGHT.
