    This Or That (6/5/2015)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlargh will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

More likely to win his title shot at Elimination Chamber? (We thought the United States title was on the line. Sorry!)

    Kevin Owens – 68%, Dean Ambrose – 32%

Who will make you cringe more on Tough Enough?

    Chris Jericho – 54%, Hulk Hogan – 46%

    Better wrestler?

    Sheamus – 68%, Wade Barrett – 32%

If forced to watch one, which would you choose?

    Ted 2 – 53%, Entourage The Movie – 47%

Which is more likely at Wrestlemania 32: Steve Austin vs. Brock Lesnar or Undertaker vs. Sting?

    Dream matches.

    matchz

    Tim:

There was a lot of convincing stuff going on with the Austin/Lesnar thing. Austin looked like he was in good shape and he went really hard into character. They switched to kayfabe (yeah, I said it) so well. Then there were actual WWE roster members tweeting about wanting that match which seems suspicious to me. I don’t know if they’d tease something that big if there wasn’t at least a good chance that it would happen. It seemed like Austin was definitely prepared for that interaction. I would love to see this even though there are a good five to six wrestlers I’d rather see these two guys wrestle instead.

Sting’s first and maybe final match in WWE was pretty sad in retrospect despite the ridiculous, nonsensical, in-the-moment nostalgia-riddled mayhem it brought us. I know he’s said he would come back for an Undertaker match. Neither of them can go like they once could. It would probably be a bad match unless you fill it full of theatrics and, well… WWE would actually have to figure out how to portray the Sting character. It would probably be Undertaker’s retirement match. They’d almost for sure put him over Sting even though it would most likely be Sting’s retirement match too. No way they’d focus on a double-retirement with an ex-WCW guy like Sting properly. I really don’t think this will happen even though I think the build-up COULD and SHOULD be really neat. I wouldn’t mind it.

Match ends. Lights go out and come back on and the urn and a baseball bat sit in the ring. Crows are flying haphazardly around the audience. The monks come down and sing a song a capella (Rolling In The Deep?) while Fred Durst (with Lex Luger in a side cart) ride a motorcycle around ringside waving the American flag.

    Steve Austin vs Brock Lesnar

    Joey:

There’s no way Steve Austin would have went as deep into character mode as he did during his podcast interview with Paul Heyman if there wasn’t some thought being given to returning at Wrestlemania. I think that means there’s a chance of it happening at least. On the other side, I think Wrestlemania 32 will be Undertaker’s last match ever and I can’t see any situation where Sting is his final opponent.

    Steve Austin vs. Brock Lesnar

    Tom:

Austin definitely looked in better shape on his most recent Network podcast with Heyman, and more in “Stone Cold mode”, as opposed to “boisterous dad mode”. The promo he cut on old Paul E. at the end was fairly sensational stuff, so even though I really can’t imagine the match being much of anything, I think the build-up to it would be great fun and worth watching. However, Austin also seems like a guy that’s very conscious of his limitations and wellbeing, which makes it hard to imagine he’d be willing to risk both his legacy and his health with a match with Brock.

Undertaker / Sting seems… I mean, if Sting’s going to do another WWE match, that’d be the one. Yeah, Sting might not be able to give ‘Taker a great final match, but I don’t think anyone could at this stage. At the very least, The Steveman could guarantee Undertaker something safe and easy, as he proved with that surprisingly fun bout he had with Hogan a few years back. Let the two old man have their 10 minute entrances and posturing and then send them off home to count their money before someone breaks a hip, for fuck’s sake.

    Undertaker vs. Sting

Around The Wrestling World In 7 Days: March 22nd, 2015

Every weekend, Joey will give a glimpse of the things that have entered his mind.

Hi. I have a lot of thoughts about wrestling. I decided to start a concept where I talk about what’s on my mind every weekend. I hope it’s enjoyable.

    Stinger

I did not watch RAW this week. The only thing I looked for after the show was Sting’s appearance helping Randy Orton take down The Authority. This was by far the best Sting has looked in a WWE setting so far. His past appearances have made me care significantly less about his debut match at Wrestlemania but this added more optimism.

    Ultimate Ladder Spotfest

A myriad of great in ring performers having a ladder match full of dazzling spots will always be fun but I can’t get myself interested in this the way others are. It reminds me of when TNA would randomly book all the X Division talent they don’t care about in an 8 man Ultimate X spotfest. Sure, it’s fun but it means absolutely nothing no matter how many times you try to tell yourself it will make a division/belt more credible.

    NXT

This week’s NXT episode was one of my favorite TV episodes they’ve done. I absolutely loved the opening match between Tyler Breeze and Kalisto. It was only about 7 minutes and nothing too special occurred but it was straight up fun wrestling.

The setting of a new crowd in Cleveland was a bonus as Full Sail is starting to remind me of the Impact Zone during the “Hoytmania” days.

Kevin Owens kicking Alex Riley in the face was a beautiful moment.

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

Will Wrestlemania 31 be the worst Wrestlemania of the last 15 years?

    Yes – 54%, No – 46%

    Better version of Paul Heyman?

    Current day Paul Heyman – 80%, Paul E. Dangerously – 20%

Who do you side with in their podcast war?

    Chris Jericho – 67%, Taz – 33%

    Better junk food snack?

    Potato chips – 68%, Cookies – 32%

This week, there’s a British invasion theme submitted by @AnimeKing420.

Better wrestler: Adrian Neville or Bad News Barrett?

    barrett-neville

    Tim:

I think Adrian Neville has more potential overall but as of right now, Bad News Barrett has the whole package. He’s a good talker and pretty good in the ring. I really like the guy. Hopefully one day WWE will use him to his full potential.

    Bad News Barrett

    Joey:

Adrian Neville has special talents that very few can imagine but Bad News Barrett is the better overall wrestler. It took me a while to see it but Barrett is very good and if he ever gets away from the hell that is the Intercontinental title picture, he may have a chance at being elevated higher on the card. Love what Neville does in NXT but it’s hard to see him adapting to a broader product without making some changes and I’m not sure he can.

    Bad News Barrett

    Tom:

First of all, I’d like to thank Nightlife for these extremely respectful questions. As the site’s resident British person, I’m delighted to share my informed opinion on these hot-button issues.

Anyway, Barrett. I like Barrett, man. I like him a whole bunch. He deserves better than he’s had so far and I hope he gets a chance to be in a spotlight position this year. However, I’ve really gotten into Adrian Neville over the past year or so; his feud with Sami Zayn showcased that he’s able to play more than just the flippy nice guy and I think he’s improved a huge amount in terms of putting together a great match.

ALSO, Neville is from Newcastle so his accent’s more of a laugh than Barrett’s Lancashire drawl. It reminds me of Byker Grove, and that is NEVER a bad thing.

    Wrestlemania

I haven’t been this less excited for a Wrestlemania since Wrestlemania 11 back when I didn’t realize Wrestlemania was a special thing. Every year going forward, there’s been at least one match or storyline that has captivated me going into the big show. Sometimes they were home runs (The Rock vs. Hollywood Hogan), sometimes they were strike outs (Randy Orton vs. Triple H), but they always made me feel something special was happening. None of that is here. Sting’s debut WWE match is my selling point but becomes less appealing every time you watch a WWE segment on Sting. The Ultimate X Ladder Match exhibition and burial of Daniel Bryan is probably most depressing.

    Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins has lost so much momentum since his breakout performance at the Royal Rumble. The best heel in years, Rollins had become the top overall performer in WWE for a few months but that’s no more as his long, drawn out angle with Randy Orton has been a kiss of death. The slow burn build to an “RKO out of nowhere” payoff at Wrestlemania 31 may be enough to kill his chances of being in a good position to leave Wrestlemania week as WWE champion.
