Wrestling Is Bullshit: Trevor Lee Playing the Homophobic Heel

One of the most embarrassing things about being a wrestling fan (which is saying something) is having to experience the casual sexism, homophobia, transphobia, racism, and all sorts of other insidious ideas that still permeate throughout the art.  However, it has been nice to see that wrestling is ever-so slightly becoming less overtly awful in regards to social issues.

The filth of hatred has not fully washed away by a longshot though, and the art is still covered in it. Occasionally, you will even still experience a popular wrestler actually using slurs that are designed to abuse and degrade people who are not white, heterosexual, cisgender men. Two times in the past year stick out in particular for me.

The first cited example can be seen above and is the latest example that I am aware of existing. Trevor Lee was making his entrance for the (#VeryOk) main event of the (#VeryOk) WrestleCon Supershow. A fan starts yelling at him, and Trevor The Irish Wrestling Fan ends up calling him a “faggot.” Continue reading

    This Or That (1/20/2016)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeyOnEarth and @TomBlargh will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

More exciting WWE signing: AJ Styles or Shinsuke Nakamura?

    Sorry, New Japan.

Nakamura is great but the AJ Styles signing is definitely the more exciting news here. Styles has been one of the best wrestlers in North America for the past decade and has been deserving of this opportunity for just as long. I can’t wait to see how he performs in the WWE atmosphere and want to see him face off with some of the current top stars like Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens and Finn Balor. All of these wrestlers are at the top of their game and Styles could have a very special run with the company.

    AJ Styles

I enjoy Nakamura a great deal when he’s going all out in a match. I think he’ll try his best in the WWE system and that will be interesting to see. A lot of the magic behind Nakamura is how he is presented and I can only hope WWE understands that. I think AJ Styles is one of the best wrestlers around. I’ve always wanted to see him in WWE and they have a great roster full of fresh matches for him. While you’ll never see me buying AJ Styles merchandise I can not deny that he’s on a level all by himself right now when it comes to in-ring performances. He’s worked his way to the top of almost every promotion he’s stepped foot in. It’s going to be surreal to see him in a WWE ring.

    AJ Styles

I am very excited for old AJ to finally get a go in WWE, but he seems like a slightly safer bet in terms of getting a decent run and baby, I am addicted to unpredicatibility and sweet, sweet chaos. WWE still hasn’t shown they know how to use a non-English speaker in a prominent role, so Nakamura’s signing is much more exciting to me – if there’s anyone who can overcome a language barrier through sheer charisma, it’s Nakamura but I still think it’ll be an uphill battle. DO YOUR BEST SHINSUKE MATE, INVEST IN SOME MAD OLD OUTFITS AND KEEP MAKING THOSE FACES.

ROH Final Battle 2015 Preview and Predictions

    Best preview on the planet.

Giving their thoughts and predictions on what to expect from the PPV are members of the site @JoeyOnEarth, @TimWelcomed and @TomBlargh.

Cheeseburger vs. “Brutal” Bob Evans in a pre-show YouTube match

I’ve found a lot of people talking about this being the match of the night on twitter and I’ve rolled my eyes but then I think about it. If Final Battle were still in New York, I probably would buy a ticket just to see Cheeseburger beat the shit out of Bob Evans. I love Cheeseburger and he is the main reason I may consider staying up for Wrestle Kingdom.

    Interest Level: 10/10
    Prediction: Cheeseburger wins.

It’s kind of wild but I finds this to be one of the best built-up matches on the card. I feel like it has been going on forever. I enjoy Cheeseburger a good bit and I’m actually looking forward to what I hope is these guys… FINAL BATTLE.

    Interest Level: 6/10
    Prediction: Cheeseburger wins.

I haven’t watched any ROH for over a year and, as a result, I feel extremely well-equipped to preview this sensational show.

I like Cheeseburger a lot. What’s he up to these days? Is he having fun? When did he and Brutal Bob have a falling out? Is this show seriously $34.99?

    Interest Level: 7/10
Prediction: Cheeseburger has a great time and everyone is happy.

Young Bucks vs. All Night Xpress vs. The Briscoes in a #1 contenders match for the tag titles

You know ROH is NJPW’s NXT when there’s a multi-team tag match on each PPV. The action should be fine but I’ve become desensitized to these 3-4 team matches. It’s kind of like the six-man tag matches on Raw. Enough is enough. That being said, it will be fun to see the Young Bucks do battle with ANX again. Hopefully there’s a dual duel.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: Young Bucks win.

I still enjoy The Young Bucks but I find myself growing tired of their shtick. This is the second time I’ve gone through this with them but they managed to draw me back in. I get that it’s a money-maker so whatever but I’d love to see them evolve a bit more at some point. ROH is pretty boring to me nowadays but I do keep up with it enough and watch their big shows. This should be a fun match but I don’t really care too much about it outside of that. I should be way more excited that ANX is back together than I am. The Briscoes and Young Bucks have developed a great chemistry and that should be enough to pull this match through.

    Interest Level: 5/10
    Prediction: Young Bucks win.

So is Jay Briscoe no longer a singles competitor? Okay. Cool. I wonder if things are awkward between Rhett Titus and Kenny King or if they’re still great mates. I would hope that the Young Bucks win this,

    Interest Level: X/10
    Prediction: C

Wednesday Night Wars: June 24, 2015

There’s a lot of wrestling on Wednesday nights.

Every week, @JoeySplashwater will attempt to watch as much of the wrestling programs on Wednesday night as he can. There will be a short recap of each program followed by the pick for Match of the Night, Performer of the Night and who won the Wednesday Night Wars?

NXT was the perfect example of what their television program is this week. The open was great with Kevin Owens, Hideo Itami, Finn Balor and Rhyno all having fun moments. The main event of Balor vs. Rhyno was solid with great commentary by Owens. There was also a spectacular promo video of Finn playing Legos with Sami Zayn.

Unfortunately, the rest of the show sucked. Nothing else and no one else on this show felt important or noteworthy and it just seemed like filler in between the opening segment and main event. I can’t even remember who the participants were.

The good was outstanding, the bad was pointless. I enjoyed the Owens vs. Finn story enough to say I liked NXT this week.

    Grade: C+

    Sexy Wrestler of The Week

Back from TIME TRAVEL, I arrive in the present just in time to name The Sexy Wrestler of The Week

Well, I can’t tell you how I got back from the bizarro 1970’s because the government had to get involved but I can tell you I am happy to be back. Anyway, The big news is The Sexy Wrestler of The Week this time around is a first time winner!

Drawing inspiration from the most recent Impact In 5 Pictures Or Less, I have found the man you voted for out in the wild to snap a picture. I personally feel he deserves this award for having a career-revitalizing year and that is something everyone knows is “Sexy.” Hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving. I did not get to celebrate because happiness was banned in the bizarro 1970’s.

    This Or That (11/11/2014)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlargh will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

Which item would you rather have received at a show?

    Bret Hart’s sunglasses – 80%, The Rock’s elbow pad – 20%

    More exciting 2015 debut?

    Daniel Bryan’s book – 56%, Avengers: Age of Ultron – 44%

Who would you rather have a two hour long conversation with?

    Taz – 84%, Michael Elgin – 16%

    Better Pixar film?

    Up – 55%, Finding Nemo – 45%

Better authority figure: Steve Austin or Mick Foley?

Who was better as a general manager/commissioner of WWE?

Steve Austin never seemed right as the GM to me. He had some funny moments but it seemed against character in a few ways not to mention he was still probably the most entertaining part of the show every week and could easily overshadow many of the active wrestlers. Mick Foley was fun and brought an enjoyable vibe to the show. It is always nice to have a face authority figure and I believe Mick Foley was one of the best.

    Mick Foley

Steve Austin was entertaining as co-GM with Eric Bischoff but his personality and star power would overtake the show. Mick Foley did an excellent job at being endearing and adding some entertaining segments but was just a guy who happened to be commish.

I’d say Foley was the best authority figure WWE had in the baby face role. When I watch 2003 RAW episodes or PPV’s, I look out for Austin segments. When I watch 2001 WWE content, I forget Foley was the Commissioner and am greeted with some pleasant memories.

    Mick Foley

I was having a sabattical from wrestling while Stone Cold was Raw’s sheriff, though from what I’ve seen, it seems like it made for some great moments. However, Mick Foley’s run as commissioner was unbeatable and that period still stands as my favourite in WWE history. If I had to pick one of them to come back to be commish these days though, I’d have to go for ol’ Stone Cold – I really enjoy his new ‘podcast dad’ persona, whereas Foley can be a little cringey sometimes.

Bullet Point Reviews: ROH TV (AJ Styles vs. Matt Sydal)

We watch wrestling shows. We will talk about wrestling shows.

@JoeySplashwater watched ROH TV last week. Here are his thoughts.

    Show open

    • Cute little Matt Sydal backstage promo. Sydal talks about wanting to prove himself, he loves wrestling, all that jazz.

    • The very outdated ROH TV show open is still around. Davey Richards is the most seen person in the video and his last ROH appearance was a full year ago.

    Mark Briscoe vs. Caprice Coleman

    • Short opening match with nothing too noteworthy. It was fine and both guys looked good.

    • Caprice Coleman has done a very good job in his sporadic TV appearances. A great utility player of sorts to have on the roster.

    • Mark Briscoe got the win to re-establish himself as a threat in ROH to actually win matches.

    • It was a fun showcase of the two but I wish either of them had more purpose on the show. It’s hard to care when a match result doesn’t matter.

    • Match result: Mark Briscoe over Caprice Coleman.

News for The Week of August 4, 2014

    • Hulk Hogan recently stated that he is training for one more match and he wants his opponent to be John Cena. We can confirm that was the first time anyone in WWE had heard about this plan.

    • Mark Henry’s son was the model outlined for Jack Swagger’s new shirt.

    • WWE is hiring Mariano Rivera and Tim Howard to help save The WWE Network.

    • TNA is marketing this week’s episode of Impact as “The Loss Boss Toss hosted by Jim Ross and Duke The Dumpster Droese.”

    • With worldwide fan praise for his work in NJPW’s G1 Climax, AJ Styles was recently seen emailing a Vine of him very awkwardly doing crotch chops to members of TNA management.

    • TNA is trying to hire as many new wrestlers as possible so if the situation arises and they do have to close their doors they can blame it on “trying to fix America’s unemployment problem.”

    • Numerous indie wrestlers were seen celebrating after Kevin Steen‘s final independent wrestling appearance under the impression they may actually have a chance to make sales at the merch tables now.

    • Chikara is looking into building a real time machine to go back to a time where more people were interested.

    • Lance Storm walked out of Guardians of the Galaxy because “raccoons can’t talk.”

Seven Things: 7 Matches I Want To See In 2014

Welcome to Seven Things, a list that will run weekly and consist of very eclectic topics. These are of my opinions and doesn’t express the views of others on WrestlingOnEarth.

The first edition of Seven Things in 2014! I have some interesting ideas in the works for future Seven Things columns but for most of January, I am hoping to focus on some forecasting for 2014.

Year end reviews are always fun to write about but the launch of a new year should create fresh ideas, new hopes and a positive outlook to everything, including wrestling. These are some of the matches I would like to see in 2014 via various promotions.

I tried to pick a different promotion for each match but ended up having to go with two WWE matches to fill out the list. Enjoy!

    7. The American Sting Rays vs. The Bro Mans: TNA

The Bro Mans with DJ Zema Ion are currently the best act in TNA and criminally underrated in the current landscape of entertaining characters in wrestling. I don’t care what your natural instinct to rebut is telling you! They are spot on with this gimmick.

Davey Richards and Eddie “Eddie Edwards” Edwards were unfortunately turned down by WWE after their NXT internship and rumors say a certain pastry enthusiast with clout in TNA is hoping to bring them in. The American Sting Rays is my educated guess of TNA’s answer to The American Pitbulls.

A match-up of this caliber sounds like an “ironic” choice on the surface but I think it would lead to an interesting program. Both teams are excellent at what they offer but both have some perceived weaknesses. The Wolves are on point in the ring but many “in the biz” critic their ability to tell a story with their matches or characters. The Bro Mans are stellar at their bit but many fans are none too pleased when it comes to their in ring skills. Aside from a fun program, both teams would probably be better for it in the long run.

Disclaimer: I know if this feud really happened, while it would be really fun, the losing team would then be off TV for months after and forgotten in true TNA fashion.
