  • Wrestling With Food: Chocolate Chip Cookies a la The Rock

The WWF Cookbook is a treasure trove of crazy recipes from the Attitude Era, each of which is purportedly the creation of one of the wrestlers. In Wrestling With Food, Sydney is on a mission to try cooking all of them to see if any are actually edible.

    rocks-cookies-600

This week, I’m making The Rock’s Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies. OH BOY. So, I was excited to make these because the word of mouth (well, Reddit, and Twitter) was pretty spectacular. Folks were really talking up these cookies! Will they live up to expectations? Let’s find out together!

    The ingredients:

    cookies-ingredients

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, at room temperature.

    1 cup granulated sugar.

    1 cup brown sugar.

    2 eggs.

    1 teaspoon vanilla.

    2 cups flour.

2 ½ cups quick oatmeal, blended to a fine powder in a food processor or blender.

    ½ teaspoon salt.

    1 teaspoon baking powder.

    1 teaspoon baking soda.

    12 oz. chocolate chips.

½ 8 oz Hershey bar, grated.

1 ½ cups chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans, or mixture).

I just want to take a moment out to point out that these cookies, while delicious (SPOILER) are quite the pain in the ass. What is up with the little extras, Dwayne? Grinding the oatmeal. GRATING THE GODDAMN HERSHEY BAR. Honestly, I likely won’t be making these until there’s a special occasion, like when Steve Blackman invites us over to dinner and we’re to bring dessert. Steve is worth the effort.

It’s also worth noting this recipe makes 4-5 dozen, so I hope you’re hungry, folks. Sure, you could half the recipe, but I like to avoid additional math whenever I can help it. Cookies for everyone!

    The process:

    1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

    2. Cream the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Stir in the eggs and vanilla. Blend in the flour, oatmeal salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Add the chocolate chips, Hershey bar, and nuts.

……can we just take a moment to appreciate how many steps the WWE shoved into Step 2? Well done, guys.

    3. Roll the dough into ¾ to 1-inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet.

    cookies-pan

    4. Bake 10 minutes, or browned to suit.

Now, I realize I skipped taking pictures of a few of the steps but I like to think we all know how to put things in a bowl and mix them. I DO have a tip for the grating of the chocolate bar, and that is to freeze it ahead of time. Otherwise, you will discover (as I did) that it gets very messy, very fast and you’ll probably curse The Rock as you grate it.

    VOILA.

    cookies-finished

Our oven runs a bit hot, but I think the timing isn’t too bad, give or take a minute. Given the amount of dough, I chilled the remainder in the fridge in between batches because we have a small oven and a limited number of cookie sheets. I cooked the first batch for 8 minutes, and the chilled dough batches for 9. Worked out pretty good!

    The verdict:

Me: These are pretty great. My only complaint is the extra steps. I would gladly eat them if someone else baked them though!

My star rating: 4 out of 5 stars. We ate these all week, and that’s after distributing 3 dozen to various family members.

    Comments from Tom:

*ZERO COMMENTS, JUST CONTENT CHOMPING SOUNDS WHILE HE SHOVELS AS MANY COOKIES INTO HIS MOUTH AS HE CAN*

Tom’s star rating: 5 out of 5 stars.

This recipe made a ton, so I also distributed among two of my brothers, and my parents. My oldest brother came in with a review of 5 out of 5 stars. My other brother also gave a 5 star review, and his wife ate 4 of them while I was at the house dropping them off. My parents were equally enthusiastic but they are also my parents so I will have to admit they have a bias.

    – Look out for another Wrestling With Food soon, or check the Wrestling With Food archives for a full rundown of all the recipes covered so far. In the meantime, you can follow Sydney on Twitter.
