WCW Comic Book Reading Club: Issue One, Page 3

    • WCW Comic Book Reading Club: Issue One, Page 3

WCW: The Comic Book was published in the early 90s by Marvel Comics. Nobody in wrestling or comics paid it much attention, and after 12 issues, it was cancelled and lost to the ages. Until now.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, @tomblackett will post a new page of the WCW comic with his comments and we’ll read through it together. We’ll be there for each other, through the good (Vader! The Steiners! Sting! Cactus Jack!) and the (Johnny B.) Badd.

WCW: The Comic (Issue One, Page 3)

WCW: The Comic is probably the property of Marvel Comics / WWE, though I’m not entirely sure. This website makes no claims to own it; all panels and images are posted in the spirit of fair use and are the property of their respective owners and creators.

Tom: “Stan Lee presents:” – guys, imagine how amazing a wrestling company booked by Stan Lee would be. Well, he’d tell you he was booking it but really he’d just take all the credit and it’d be a couple of other dudes doing most of the work while getting screwed out of royalties. HO HO HO, COMICS JOKES! It’s the only business shittier than wrestling!

Also, the credits box deserves to be acknowledged:

Nasty Neil Yomtov kind of got the short straw with his nickname, but whatever, he’s just the colorist. Also, ‘nasty’ might be pretty apt – you see how all the guys in the ring are orange? COME ON NASTY NEIL, YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THAT.

It’s also the first page where we’re introduced to our narrators / commentary team, and Merciless Mike Lackey actually does kind of a cool job with this concept!

He gives Jim Ross, Paul E. Dangerously and Missy Hyatt fairly unique voices and they actually make for a fun Greek chorus to accompany the action. The gimmick of Paul E’s headset being broken is also well done. MERCILESS MIKE, YOU’RE DOING A PRETTY GOOD JOB.

      This is weird though:

A ‘Wrestler of the Year’ trophy? Either Merciless Mike was some kind of soothsayer and predicted the looming terror of the Slammies, or he’s just making stuff up. Anyway! See you on Wednesday for the next page.
