WCW Comic Book Reading Club: Issue One, Page 20

    • WCW Comic Book Reading Club: Issue One, Page 20

WCW: The Comic Book was published in the early 90s by Marvel Comics. Nobody in wrestling or comics paid it much attention, and after 12 issues, it was cancelled and lost to the ages. Until now.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, @tomblackett will post a new page of the WCW comic with his comments and we’ll read through it together. We’ll be there for each other, through the good (Vader! The Steiners! Sting! Cactus Jack!) and the (Johnny B.) Badd.

WCW: The Comic (Issue One, Page 20)

WCW: The Comic is probably the property of Marvel Comics / WWE, though I’m not entirely sure. This website makes no claims to own it; all panels and images are posted in the spirit of fair use and are the property of their respective owners and creators.

Tom: Ron Simmons is THROUGH with Johnny B. Badd’s shit, so after a kind of clever quip, he gives him a destructive backbreaker and tosses him out the ring:

…y’know, there’s something very familiar about all this. What does it remind me of?

That’s right, the monumental moment of Batman #497 where Bane breaks Batman’s back.

HOWEVER!!!! In a GENUINELY SHOCKING TWIST, the image of Simmons breaking the Badd pre-dates Bane breaking the Bat by a full year! With that in mind, is it fair to make the assumption that WCW: The Comic was the DIRECT INFLUENCE for the ‘Knightfall’ storyline (and subsequently, the three hour snoozefest that was ‘The Dark Knight Rises’)?

I’m going for definitely yes. Christopher Nolan, you owe WCW comic writer ‘Merciless’ Mike Lackey a royalty cheque!

Anyway, after what feels like months, the battle royal is FINALLY OVER. Ron Simmons is our winner and we see him awarded an incredible trophy:

I can’t even remember what the trophy’s for. Wrestler of the Year? Something like that. Anyway, it’s a heartfelt moment and WAIT WHO IS THAT COMING OVER THE BARRICADES:

THAT WASN’T A SNARK MARK PERVERT SITTING IN THE FRONT ROW! IT WAS LEX LUGER! IT WAS LEX LUGER ALL ALONG!

We’re racing towards our epic conclusion here. Come back on Wednesday for the penultimate page!
