WCW Comic Book Reading Club: Issue One, Page 19

    • WCW Comic Book Reading Club: Issue One, Page 19

WCW: The Comic Book was published in the early 90s by Marvel Comics. Nobody in wrestling or comics paid it much attention, and after 12 issues, it was cancelled and lost to the ages. Until now.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, @tomblackett will post a new page of the WCW comic with his comments and we’ll read through it together. We’ll be there for each other, through the good (Vader! The Steiners! Sting! Cactus Jack!) and the (Johnny B.) Badd.

WCW: The Comic (Issue One, Page 19)

WCW: The Comic is probably the property of Marvel Comics / WWE, though I’m not entirely sure. This website makes no claims to own it; all panels and images are posted in the spirit of fair use and are the property of their respective owners and creators.

Tom: Sting gets EXTREMELY defensive and spicy towards Johnny B. Badd in the first panel:

I wish ‘so shut up, okay?’ was Sting’s actual catchphrase. IF YOU AIN’T DOWN WITH THE STINGER, HE’S GOT FOUR WORDS FOR YA.

He then goes on to give a heart-rending speech to Johnny on the merits of sportsmanship:

“Wrestling’s a sport–! The only TRUE sport! No wimpy time-outs, no padding, or protection! We work for our reputations every stinking night!

You just don’t get it, do you?

It’s not about reputations – or winning. Pleasing the FANS — knowing you’re doing the right thing — that’s what’s important!”

Okay, sorry to interrupt, but… are reputations important or not? At first, he says they’re working for their reputations every (stinking) night, but then immediately afterwards, he says it’s not about reputations. So which is it, Sting? WHAT MATTERS? WHAT’S IMPORTANT? I need you to tell me what to think here! You’re all I’ve got!

It’s too late to get him off his high horse though, as he continues berating Badd:

“It’s guys like you who give wrestlers a bad name, by taking the EASY road to CHAMPIONSHIPS. Either you’re STEALING the belts or CHEATING to keep them! But not TONIGHT, no way!”

It’s powerful stuff, showing that Sting’s made of the stuff that matters, that he’s a real champion who deserves to wi-

      Oh, okay, forget it.

So with Sting gone, we’ve only got Ron Simmons left to stop Johnny B. Badd from winning. It’s getting tense, man. I’ll see you on Friday.
