Around The Wrestling World In 7 Days

Every weekend, Joey will give a glimpse of the things that have entered his mind.

Hi. I have a lot of thoughts about wrestling. I decided to start a concept where I talk about what’s on my mind every weekend. I hope it’s enjoyable.

Follow me on Twitter and let me know if you want me to hit on any wrestling topics next week: @JoeySplashwater

    Wrestlemania

I haven’t been this less excited for a Wrestlemania since Wrestlemania 11 back when I didn’t realize Wrestlemania was a special thing. Every year going forward, there’s been at least one match or storyline that has captivated me going into the big show. Sometimes they were home runs (The Rock vs. Hollywood Hogan), sometimes they were strike outs (Randy Orton vs. Triple H), but they always made me feel something special was happening. None of that is here. Sting’s debut WWE match is my selling point but becomes less appealing every time you watch a WWE segment on Sting. The Ultimate X Ladder Match exhibition and burial of Daniel Bryan is probably most depressing.

    Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins has lost so much momentum since his breakout performance at the Royal Rumble. The best heel in years, Rollins had become the top overall performer in WWE for a few months but that’s no more as his long, drawn out angle with Randy Orton has been a kiss of death. The slow burn build to an “RKO out of nowhere” payoff at Wrestlemania 31 may be enough to kill his chances of being in a good position to leave Wrestlemania week as WWE champion.

    This Or That (11/4/2014)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlargh will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

    Better Frog Splash?

    Rob Van Dam – 74%, Eddie Guerrero – 26%

    Better Powerbomb?

    Sid – 76%, Kevin Nash – 24%

    Better Shooting Star Press?

    Paul London – 81%, Billy Kidman – 19%

    Better Superkick?

    Shawn Michaels – 57%, Young Bucks – 43%

Which wrestling item would you rather have received at a show: The Rock’s elbow pad or Bret Hart’s sunglasses?

Would you rather have had caught Rock’s elbow pad before he hit the People’s Elbow or have Bret Hart hand you his sunglasses when you were a kid?

    rock-bret

    Tim:

Yeah, I want a smelly and sweaty elbow pad randomly thrown into the audience from a douchebag who is performing an overly dramatic and dumb elbow maneuver. Just kidding. I’m not a creepy lunatic after all. I want the cool wrestler who ends up being a bitter mess later on in his career to strap some cheap but really fucking shiny and pink sunglasses on my bulbous alien head.

    Bret Hart’s sunglasses

    Joey:

As a kid, I despised Bret Hart and even I wanted those damn sunglasses. They were probably the coolest merch item in WWE history. Catching The Rock’s elbow pad would have been fun (and worth more on Ebay) but it would just be the luck of it falling to you. Bret actually picking you and putting it on your face would have been a memory for life. Give me the Hitman sunglasses. (Seriously. Someone send me a pair.)

    Bret Hart’s sunglasses

    Tom:

Here’s the difference between Rock’s elbow pad and Bret’s sunglasses – when you catch the elbow pad, it’s a combination of reach, dumb luck and positioning. With Bret? He CHOOSES you. He picks you out as the number one kid in the crowd (or at least in the front row). Plus, you can wear them all around town afterwards whereas it’s difficult to tie an elbow pad into a snazzy outfit. Gimme dem sunglasses, boy.

    Bret Hart’s sunglasses

Seven Things: 7 Most Asinine Things Michael Elgin Said

Michael Elgin has become pro wrestling’s Amanda Bynes.

Muddled in controversy with Ring of Honor the last few months, Michael Elgin sat down with HighSpots to take part in a “shoot interview” to clear his name. Breaking the silence, Elgin answers everything about his citizenship issues, heat among wrestlers in the ROH locker room and why he lost the ROH Championship.

At the risk of exposing myself too much, I’m a softie at heart and many times when I go into watching a shoot interview of a wrestler I dislike, I tend to find sympathy for their side of a story and understand them a little better. This was not the case here.

Elgin shows a high level of arrogance and entitlement while passing the blame to everyone else for each of his issues. I wouldn’t recommend watching this unless you’re hooked deeply into the ROH vs. Michael Elgin story and even so, I can’t vouch for sitting through 2 hours of this.

HighSpots provides excellent content like The Kevin Steen Show and Project Paul London DVDs that are much more worth your money and time. For traditional shoots, there’s a $1 Davey Richards shoot on their DIYWrestling.com VOD site that was far more interesting than this.

    7. “People like to just get butt hurt. That’s in our society.”

No, this quote was not about anal sex. Though, Michael Elgin does talk about his sex life later in the shoot thanks to Wrestling On Earth’s own @TomBlargh.

    hornyfacts

Elgin was asked about referring to himself as “Mr. Wrestlemania Weekend” and it rubbing the ROH locker room the wrong way. He admitted that many ROH wrestlers disliked him and were annoyed by the nickname but it was “funny” to him. Elgin says he’s a funny guy that just loves to make jokes and saying something like that is his concept of humor. More ridiculous is “Unbreakable” talking about how society gets offended too easily and that was the case with his fellow ROH wrestlers.

95% of the time in life when someone’s excuse for saying stupid is that society gets too offended these days, it’s because the person is unhappy with reaction to saying or doing something foolish. See: Daniel Snyder and NFL folks wanting to keep the insensitive “Redskins” name while holding on to the crutch that people are just too sensitive today.

News for The Week of August 25, 2014

    WWE

    • Hulk Hogan is still training for one final match. Last week numerous reports came in that he was spotted jogging along a beach in Florida chanting “I still got it” and simulating fake crowd noise by cupping his mouth and making a “caaaaahhh” sound.

    • The loser of the Jack Swagger vs. Bo Dallas feud will literally be buried in a doghouse.

    • Vince McMahon is down on Adam Rose because he thought he was doing a “really bad Willy Wonka impression.” Creative was extremely baffled by this but ultimately decided it would be best to agree with him.

    TNA

    • TNA has received an offer from Velocity to air Impact Wrestling. We can confirm that if TNA accepts the deal it will be a shot at Jeff Jarrett and his failed All Wheels Wrestling pilot.

    • The Bro Mans are going to social media to find new dates*. (*Calendar dates to wrestle on because TNA only runs 3 shows per month.)

    • We weren’t able to get full confirmation so take this as just a rumor for now but Vince Russo may still be working for TNA. If true, TNA management is now treating it as a “double secret” with a lot of mandated pinky promises involved.

Before we start, here’s last week’s results:

Who will have more WWE World Championship reigns in the next 3 years?

    John Cena – 61%, Roman Reigns – 39%

Better place-holder heel to win MITB?

    Alberto Del Rio – 74%, Randy Orton – 26%

    Stardust.

    Yay – 76%, Nay – 24%

    Better sport?

    Hockey – 63%, Soccer – 27%

Which ladder match are you more excited for: WWE Championship match or MITB briefcase match?

One’s for the title, one’s for the briefcase, but which do you care about most?

    mitb

    Tim:

I think the real Money In The Bank briefcase match is going to be a lot more fun to watch strictly from a wrestling perspective and seeing who will win. You’ll have Kofi Kingston who can deliver some fun spots, Dolph Ziggler who will go all out, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose in the ring together, and Wade Barrett throwin’ some ‘bows. Sounds great to me!

The six-man ladder match for the title has a lot of potential to tell some interesting stories and be a hotbed for future feuds, however they haven’t made me care about it. I don’t care too much about any wrestler in that match outside of Cesaro. I’m already dreading the upcoming year full of Roman Reigns Is Almighty. Added to all of this was the Kane nonsense so I completely checked out. Kane has the power to make me not care about anything. But here’s to hoping it is an interesting match.

    MITB briefcase match

    Joey:

The ascension of Roman Reigns, the potential of Cesaro, the star power of John Cena and the fact that the actual title was on the line would have made the WWE Championship ladder match the clear choice but the corny go home segment of Kane attacking everyone just took so much out of it for me. At least the briefcase match has enough talented guys who can utilize the ladders more than the main eventers plus there’s an actual reason to care about Rollins vs. Ambrose as opposed to any interaction of the main event.

    MITB briefcase match

    Tom:

I think the show on Sunday should be a really fun time, not that the announcements and additions last night did much to get me excited for it, the worst of those being Kane being placed as such a key part of the WWE Championship. Fuck you, Kane! Go home! We don’t want you anymore! The match should still be fantastic, but now I can almost imagine Kane winning the bloody thing, just so Bryan can get his revenge and win the title from him at Summerslam.

As for the MITB briefcase match, while I think the Rollins / Ambrose dynamic will be tremendous, the rest of the guys in that match really do seem like a lot of filler. I guess that’s typical for a MITB match though, so having guys like Ziggler and Kofi go crashing around as they get caught between Sexy Seth and Dangerous Dean, Troubled Teen should be a good time.

ROH Best In The World 2014 Preview and Predictions

    ROH’s first live PPV. It’s a mullet-free zone.

    bitw-ppv-rotor-1

Giving their thoughts and predictions on what to expect from the PPV are members of the site @JoeySplashwater, @TimWelcomed and @TomBlackett.

Roderick Strong vs. Cedric Alexander in a Submission Match

    Joey:

Cedric Alexander is so young and has a world of potential. This needs to be his coming out party in ROH. Not into the idea of a submission match but you’d assume they have something cool planned to stick this stipulation on it? Either way, it should be an outside candidate for match of the night.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: Cedric Alexander wins.

    Tim:

Submission matches are okay. I don’t understand why this has to be one but whatever. I’m hoping this match will make Cedric Alexander stand out even more. He should have a bright future ahead of him. Roderick Strong is pretty much the Alberto Del Rio of the indies currently. He can have strong matches against almost anyone but you never really find yourself caring too much. He’s a great person to help highlight Alexander here.

    Interest Level: 8/10
    Prediction: Cedric Alexander wins.

    Tom:

Not sure why this one’s a submission match, but Cedric Alexander seems to be on the up and up, while Roddy… well, for good and for bad, Roddy’s Roddy. Tim’s Del Rio comparison is absolutely perfect – he’s capable of being in fun matches, but it’s hard to get excited for him.

    Interest Level: 6/10
    Prediction: Roderick Strong wins.

ACH vs. Takaaki Watanabe vs. Caprice Coleman vs. Tadarius Thomas vs. BJ Whitmer vs. Tommaso Ciampa in 6 Man Mayhem for a future TV Title shot

    Joey:

Spots on spots on spots. ACH gonna ACH all match long. You’d think Ciampa gets the win here as the singles star with the biggest reputation in ROH as the other guys are lower on the card than him.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: Tommaso Ciampa wins.

    Tim:

This match should be pretty wild. Not much else to say about it. I am not sure who will win so just for fun I’m going to go with ACH because he’s ACH.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: ACH wins.

    Tom:

Did you know that Caprice Coleman is 37 years old? THIRTY SEVEN! How is that possible? Anyway, this should be a fun mess. It’s difficult to imagine seeing anyone but Ciampa winning.

    Interest Level: 6/10
    Prediction: Tomasso Ciampa wins.

ROH Death Before Dishonor XI Preview

ROH crowns a NEW World Champ in Philly this weekend. Who will it be?

    Let’s run down the card.

    roh2

    Adam Cole vs. Tomasso Ciampa:

I can see this being a “Match of the Year contender” very easily. Adam Cole is obviously stellar and is becoming a fixture in the upper echelon of ROH. Tomasso Ciampa has looked excellent since his return to ROH and it would be hard to dispute this is the biggest match of his career.

This match made the show so appealing to me when I was considering making the trip to Philly that unfortunately fell through. I really expect a special match here and I hope whoever wins is the person to become ROH Champ.

    Interest Level: 10/10
    Prediction: Adam Cole advances.

    Michael Elgin vs. Kevin Steen:

Much like the other semi-finals match, this should deliver. Michael Elgin has great matches every show and Kevin Steen is the biggest star in ROH at the moment. It’s hard for that to not deliver.

Unlike the other match where I can see the very slight chance of a Ciampa upset, I don’t think there’s any way Elgin doesn’t advance. We’ll break down the finals later.

    Interest Level: 8/10
Prediction: Michael Elgin advances. Continue reading

House Of Glory Videos: Kevin Steen Saves Panda Man

Kevin Steen, a panda man and your imagination walk into a wrestling ring….

As seen in the photos earlier this week, Wrestling on Earthling Khristen Wilson (find him on Twitter @khristheunicorn) attended Amazing Red’s House of Glory show featuring many ROH talent.

Kevin Steen was there. House of Glory student Panda Man was there. This happened.

Here’s another video of the end of the show featuring Adam “Sexy Wrestler” Cole, Michael Elgin, Roderick Strong and the “king of merchCrimson:

House of Glory vs. Ring of Honor Pics

This past weekend, Manhattan Mayhem V wasn’t the only place to see Ring of Honor wrestlers in New York, with a few top stars also appearing at Amazing Red’s House of Glory promotion in what was billed as an ‘ROH invasion’.

Our own personal Jimmy Olsen, Khristen Wilson was in attendance – find him on Twitter @khristheunicorn and check out some of his great pics below.

ROH All Star Extravaganza V Preview

One of the best Ring of Honor cards in recent memory, I can’t wait to see this show when it becomes available onDemand. It’s a shame ROH couldn’t figure out how to solve their iPPV problems because this could very well have been among their most viewed events.

Stacked from top to bottom with incredible and eclectic outside talent, I’m expecting a show of the year candidate.

    ROHALLstar

Forever Hooligans vs. The American Wolves:

Should be fantastic. Davey Richards and Rocky Romero in No Remorse Corps were one of my favorite ROH tag teams so it will be cool seeing these two interact. Two of the best tag teams in the world facing off can’t not produce good results.

With the reDRagon rematch already booked for NYC and the Wolves lack of ROH contract security, I can’t see another tag title change happening this weekend.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: Forever Hooligans win.

    Kevin Steen vs. Brian Kendrick:

Like I mentioned in my ROH Title Tournament preview, I’m very fond of Brian Kendrick’s recent work so I have high expectations for this match. With the lack of matches announced for the NYC show in just two weeks, I’m hoping great performances from guys like Kendrick, Paul London, Kushida and the Young Bucks will lead to announcements of them all being booked for Manhattan Mayhem. I can only dream. This match should all sorts of wonderful, especially in front of that Canadian crowd.

    Interest Level: 9/10
Prediction: Kevin Steen wins. Continue reading
