Wrestling On Earth’s Top 10 Twitter Accounts of 2015

Wrestlers have Twitter accounts. Usually they’re very bad, but sometimes? Sometimes, they’re solid stuff.

Over the course of about 90 emails, @JoeyOnEarth, @TimWelcomed and @TomBlargh determined their ten favorite wrestling Twitter accounts in 2015. Feelings were hurt, shots were fired and things got very real, but we ultimately came to terms on a list that we can live with, or at least one that we’re too exhausted to keep fighting about any longer.

PLEASE NOTE: We’re only ranking wrestlers and other notables in “The Biz”, so shut up about how funny you and your stupid mates are on Twitter, it’s not always about you ffs.

    10. Dave Meltzer

    Joey:

The pandering for NJPW/PWG and hatred for WWE/Neville has made Dave Meltzer a great presence on social media. Most of his gems are on the podcasts but he will give a fun out of context tweet every now and then. MeltzMan has a perfect dry sense of humor for Twitter. (Sorry, Neville. I tried to keep him off the list but Tom WHINED for HOURS about it.)

    Tim:

I did not agree with The Meltz making this list but a lot of things were said (by Tom) in the deliberations. Eventually you just give up the fight and move on to something else. He’s made a few funny tweets here and there despite not knowing it. His actual jokes can be funny for all of the wrong reasons. I still think someone like Randy Orton deserves this spot. Anyway, there are worse accounts that could have made the list so I can be thankful for having Big Dave in the number ten spot instead.

    Tom:

The other two gave me so much shit about this, you wouldn’t believe it. Is Big Dave a wrestler? No, no he is not. However, his presence on social media is one of my absolute favourite things about wrestling, even when he’s droning on about UFC.

The times when he makes “jokes” are especially sensational. Really, my favourite bit about Melty is the way everyone else reacts to him, like he’s the mad old uncle in the corner of the room making references no-one gets.

    9. Daniel Bryan

    Joey:

I love Daniel Bryan’s presence on social media. You can tell he clearly hates it but his employer and his wife kind of forces him to use it. The results are that of an old man who thinks smart phones are evil posting rare honest thoughts without a filter. I know this is about Twitter only but I’m a fan of Bryan’s Instagram always being updated coincidentally the same time as Brie Bella’s and typically all posts about Brie Bella.

ALSO OF NOTE: Bryan RT’d a link to our review of his book in 2015. Tom is confirmed a traitor.

    Tim:

I could have went either way on this one. Daniel Bryan seems like a really sweet person who tries to stand by his core set of values. He uses his platform to try spreading what he believes is right which is kind of nice in the wrestling world. He has a certain charm about him but that’s what makes him so likable in the first place. I don’t think he tweets enough but it is always funny when you get the vibe that he’s just there because he has to be.

    Tom:

I personally wouldn’t have Bryan in my top 10 list. I think he’s an absolute sweetheart and his anti-consumerism messages that run in complete opposite to WWE’s core mission are very fun, but he’s just not active enough – when it comes to social media content, I need volume!

RESPONSE NOTE: I am NOT a traitor, Joey just can’t stand me keeping it real. Continue reading

Survivor Series 2015 Preview and Predictions

Survivor Series Elimination Match (Unknown participants)

    Joey:

My assumption is for a match featuring The Usos, Ryback, Cesaro and Neville vs. New Day, Barrett and Sheamus or something like that. The New Day are basically guaranteed to be in it so it’s guaranteed a fun time. I like the elimination matches and most of the wrestlers available can deliver in the ring. I don’t know the participants but I’m expecting it as the Match of the Night.

    Interest Level: 8/10
Prediction: New Days Rocks! (but loses because the faces will win this match)

    Tim:

I figure it’ll just be the most rocking mid-carders facing off in this match full of historical importance. You know the guys. People like Neville. People that are so good that WWE doesn’t know what to do with them. The true prodigies of our time. I know that it will be a blast no matter what. It’s a Survivor Series match. How could it not be mind-blowing?

    Interest Level: 10/10
Prediction: Jaw-dropping action and a raucous crowd

    Tom:

Previewing a mystery match, what the fuck are we even doing here? Good lord. Survior Series matches are okay though, I guess? Except when they’re not. Hopefully it’s Team Main Event vs. Team Superstars so we get to see the fantastic Fandango settle some scores with Heath Slater and Adam Rose on a major PPV.

    Interest Level: 8/10
Prediction: Everyone has a lovely time.

We Are NXT? TakeOver: Brooklyn Recap

NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn came to Barclays Center and these humans attended.

@TJHawke411 and @JoeySplashwater somehow tempted the gods of wrestling karma into getting sick seats to NXT. Both considered it the greatest wrestling experience of their lives and will share their memories along with any new thoughts after watching it on replay. TJ is using the star rating system and Joey is using the Brad Ward rating system.

    Welcome to NXT

    woenxt1

    TJ:

TakeOver: Brooklyn was actually my first live WWE show as an adult, and it was an eye-opening experience. I know it sounds condescending as hell, but the people-watching that you cannot help but engage in while you are surrounded by the wonderful characters of the WWE Universe is truly next level. That was quickly remedied once we got into the building because we got to sit in the section with the family and guests of the wrestlers! Most of them seemed quite lovely and contained endearingly-high levels of excitement to see their friends and family in the ring. This change in surroundings removed the possibilities of an unpleasant fan experience harming the show. Success!

    Joey:

I went back and forth on whether to attend TakeOver: Brooklyn or ROH Field of Honor 2. Around the time the double main event was announced for NXT, I made the decision to attend this especially since it was in my “home arena” about 10 minutes away and there was a very special feel around it. I made a great decision. After being in this arena nearly 20 times for various events, I’ve never been located anywhere but the highest level. Somehow our seats were the best view in the entire arena, second row ringside around a bunch of lovely people. The experience of getting in the venue and finding our seats was already amazing.

Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Tyler Breeze

    Joey:

The idea of Jushin Thunder Liger making his WWE debut this late into his legendary career in front of a sold out arena is pretty cool. I think the atmosphere will make this match very good and it could end up being the most memorable moment of the night.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: Tyler Breeze wins.

    Tim:

Seeing Jushin Liger wrestle at a WWE event is pretty exciting to me. I’ve always been a huge fan of him so this is probably one of the biggest reasons for me to watch. I can enjoy Tyler Breeze from time to time so yeah, bring it on. I’m pretty interested in seeing these two square off in this environment.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: Tyler Breeze wins.

    Tom:

Sure, okay, alright. These guys are on opposite ends of their careers, and as a result, I think there’s a limit to just how good this’ll be. Like, neither guy is really capable of much more than a pretty good singles match right now – Liger’s great matches are all behind him and Breeze’s are all in the future (or at least hopefully they are). Liger in a WWE ring is a fun novelty though, and a nice amount of silliness in Breeze’s entrance should make this enjoyable.

    Interest Level: 6/10
    Prediction: Tyler Breeze wins.

Wade Barrett vs. R-Truth in a Battle for the Crown

    Joey:

Wade Barrett desperately needs to lose this to have any chance of being relevant again. I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news! (Get it???) Barrett is probably going to win this and continue being the goofy dude in a crown.

    Interest Level: 3/10
    Prediction: Wade Barrett wins.

    Tim:

Wade Barrett is a goof right now as the King of The Ring. He’ll probably always be booked as a goof at this point but hopefully this match was made to get him out of the gimmick. Realistically, this match was probably made to give him something to do and give him a win. I don’t care too much about this match.

    Interest Level: 3/10
    Prediction: Wade Barrett wins.

    Tom:

My goodness, what a way to start the show. I’m going to go against the grain here and say that Truth gets the win so he can continue doing his wacky king character to give him something to do, whereas Barrett can drop it and just do his best to go back to how things were before all this mess. Unlikely, but I think it’d be better for everybody.

    Interest Level: 2/10
    Prediction: R-Truth wins.

    Cesaro vs. Diego

    Joey:

Not sure who exactly Diego is but I’ll assume it’s Primo or his tag partner. This will probably end up as the third best match of the night because this is a house show. Both guys will have extra incentive to tear it up as neither usually have singles matches on the other live Network specials aka PPVs.

    Interest Level: 8/10
    Prediction: Cesaro wins.

    Tim:

This doesn’t sound too bad. The former Primo isn’t a bad in-ring competitor at all and with him facing off against Cesaro there’s no reason this shouldn’t be an entertaining match.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: Cesaro wins.

    Tom:

What a weird match. Is this happening because they’d already sorted the lads out with their visas when Tyson got injured so they just had to figure out another way to use old Cesaro and Los Matadores? Am I over-thinking this? Anyway, Cesaro with a smaller, somewhat flippy guy sounds alright to me.

    Interest Level: 6/10
    Prediction: Cesaro wins.

Wednesday Night Wars: June 24, 2015

There’s a lot of wrestling on Wednesday nights.

Every week, @JoeySplashwater will attempt to watch as much of the wrestling programs on Wednesday night as he can. There will be a short recap of each program followed by the pick for Match of the Night, Performer of the Night and who won the Wednesday Night Wars?

    NXT

    NXT

NXT was the perfect example of what their television program is this week. The open was great with Kevin Owens, Hideo Itami, Finn Balor and Rhyno all having fun moments. The main event of Balor vs. Rhyno was solid with great commentary by Owens. There was also a spectacular promo video of Finn playing Legos with Sami Zayn.

Unfortunately, the rest of the show sucked. Nothing else and no one else on this show felt important or noteworthy and it just seemed like filler in between the opening segment and main event. I can’t even remember who the participants were.

The good was outstanding, the bad was pointless. I enjoyed the Owens vs. Finn story enough to say I liked NXT this week.

    Grade: C+

R-Truth vs. King Barrett on the kick-off show

    Joey:

I have a theory that R-Truth is retiring this year and he’s being randomly inserted in weird situations (WM Ladder match, Elimination Chamber match, the recent Raw promo) on TV before he leaves. As for this match, it is what it is. Fine match that you don’t care much about.

    Interest Level: 3/10
    Prediction: R-Truth wins.

    Tim:

R-Truth legitimately got a laugh out of me on Monday. That doesn’t happen often nowadays. That doesn’t make me care about this match. They are both decent wrestlers so the match should be okay but I doubt I’ll remember it in a week.

    Interest Level: 2/10
    Prediction: King Barrett Wins.

    Tom:

Did Barrett do something to get people cross at him? Or is this just what happen to modern Kings of the Ring(s)? R-Truth being confused is a good time but I don’t have any interest in seeing him wrestle.

    Interest Level: 2/10
    Prediction: R-Truth wins.

Ryback vs. Big Show for the Intercontinental Championship

    Joey:

The set-up for this match has been as great as one could have hoped for. Big Show has been absolutely hilarious on the last two episodes of Raw. Ryback has been a very likeable character lately. As great as the character work has been, I still have no interest in this match based off past history. Hopefully they prove me wrong.

    Interest Level: 3/10
    Prediction: Ryback wins.

    Tim:

I have not enjoyed any bit of this. Ryback is doing fine as a face and is actually tolerable but I just can’t get into him. I sure as hell can’t enjoy The Big Show and his “wit.” I don’t care for either of these guy much when it comes to their wrestling style so this match just isn’t for me.

    Interest Level: 1/10
    Prediction: Ryback wins.

    Tom:

Jesus. JESUS. I’m not ready for this. I’ve enjoyed The Big Show and The Big Guy engage in some Big Banter, but the only matches I want to see them in are ones with mad stipulations. Musical chairs or yo momma joke diss-offs or something. You know what would be best? Just force them to compete in all those mad contests from the first season of NXT, I want to see Ryback and Big Show carrying barrels around the ring and having to dance with the corpse of Mae Young, anything but wrestle.

    Interest Level: 1/10
    Prediction: Ryback wins.

    This Or That (6/5/2015)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlargh will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

More likely to win his title shot at Elimination Chamber? (We thought the United States title was on the line. Sorry!)

    Kevin Owens – 68%, Dean Ambrose – 32%

Who will make you cringe more on Tough Enough?

    Chris Jericho – 54%, Hulk Hogan – 46%

    Better wrestler?

    Sheamus – 68%, Wade Barrett – 32%

If forced to watch one, which would you choose?

    Ted 2 – 53%, Entourage The Movie – 47%

Which is more likely at Wrestlemania 32: Steve Austin vs. Brock Lesnar or Undertaker vs. Sting?

    Dream matches.

    matchz

    Tim:

There was a lot of convincing stuff going on with the Austin/Lesnar thing. Austin looked like he was in good shape and he went really hard into character. They switched to kayfabe (yeah, I said it) so well. Then there were actual WWE roster members tweeting about wanting that match which seems suspicious to me. I don’t know if they’d tease something that big if there wasn’t at least a good chance that it would happen. It seemed like Austin was definitely prepared for that interaction. I would love to see this even though there are a good five to six wrestlers I’d rather see these two guys wrestle instead.

Sting’s first and maybe final match in WWE was pretty sad in retrospect despite the ridiculous, nonsensical, in-the-moment nostalgia-riddled mayhem it brought us. I know he’s said he would come back for an Undertaker match. Neither of them can go like they once could. It would probably be a bad match unless you fill it full of theatrics and, well… WWE would actually have to figure out how to portray the Sting character. It would probably be Undertaker’s retirement match. They’d almost for sure put him over Sting even though it would most likely be Sting’s retirement match too. No way they’d focus on a double-retirement with an ex-WCW guy like Sting properly. I really don’t think this will happen even though I think the build-up COULD and SHOULD be really neat. I wouldn’t mind it.

Match ends. Lights go out and come back on and the urn and a baseball bat sit in the ring. Crows are flying haphazardly around the audience. The monks come down and sing a song a capella (Rolling In The Deep?) while Fred Durst (with Lex Luger in a side cart) ride a motorcycle around ringside waving the American flag.

    Steve Austin vs Brock Lesnar

    Joey:

There’s no way Steve Austin would have went as deep into character mode as he did during his podcast interview with Paul Heyman if there wasn’t some thought being given to returning at Wrestlemania. I think that means there’s a chance of it happening at least. On the other side, I think Wrestlemania 32 will be Undertaker’s last match ever and I can’t see any situation where Sting is his final opponent.

    Steve Austin vs. Brock Lesnar

    Tom:

Austin definitely looked in better shape on his most recent Network podcast with Heyman, and more in “Stone Cold mode”, as opposed to “boisterous dad mode”. The promo he cut on old Paul E. at the end was fairly sensational stuff, so even though I really can’t imagine the match being much of anything, I think the build-up to it would be great fun and worth watching. However, Austin also seems like a guy that’s very conscious of his limitations and wellbeing, which makes it hard to imagine he’d be willing to risk both his legacy and his health with a match with Brock.

Undertaker / Sting seems… I mean, if Sting’s going to do another WWE match, that’d be the one. Yeah, Sting might not be able to give ‘Taker a great final match, but I don’t think anyone could at this stage. At the very least, The Steveman could guarantee Undertaker something safe and easy, as he proved with that surprisingly fun bout he had with Hogan a few years back. Let the two old man have their 10 minute entrances and posturing and then send them off home to count their money before someone breaks a hip, for fuck’s sake.

    Undertaker vs. Sting

Which is more likely at Wrestlemania 32?

    • Undertaker vs. Sting (55%, 29 Votes)
    • Steve Austin vs. Brock Lesnar (45%, 24 Votes)

    Total Voters: 53

Miz TV with Daniel Bryan on the pre-show

    Joey:

Daniel Bryan and The Miz have always had great chemistry so this should be an entertaining segment. We’ll also get to see Bryan and get the latest on his condition which is hopefully good news.

    Interest Level: 9/10
    Prediction: Everyone laughs at Miz.

    Tim:

Daniel Bryan will be promoting his stuff but just seeing him makes me happy. Maybe he’ll throw some shade at The Miz because he’s just a goon.

    Interest Level: 5/10
Prediction: We all end up pointing at The Miz for being a goon.

    Tom:

Miz is obnoxious, the commentators are idiots, Bryan is a sweetheart who does his best to promote his book and DVD without giving away too much about what the future holds.

    Interest Level: 8/10
Prediction: Daniel Bryan gives Miz a dry slap.

    Brad:

I think the idea here is that Daniel Bryan will be out to promote his new DVD and perhaps mention the book. We could hear something about his rehab, but quite unlikely.

    Interest Level: 5/10
Prediction: Daniel Bryan plugs his DVD.
