Mark Henry & Bobby Lashley aren’t the only black wrestlers Michael Hayes has had racial incidents with. One source says Hayes has made similar comments to former WWE wrestler & current TNA star Booker T as well. In Lashley’s case, it was one of the reasons he decided to leave the company.

    * BostonHerald.com has a story on Roger Clemens making a pass at the wife of former WWE star Brutus “The Barber Beefcake 18 years ago. Barbara Leslie was working as a waitress (and hadn’t met her husband yet), and Clemens was married at the time. Clemens followed her into her off-limits dressing room and said, “What would you do if I tried to kiss you?” Barbara Leslie replied, “What would your wife say if you tried to kiss me?”

    * The new issue of Rolling Stone Magazine with the girls from “The Hills” on the cover features an article about a high-end escort service in Los Angeles, California. The escort service is run by a woman named “Nici” who would set up beautiful women (Playboy Playmates, Maxim and FHM models, porn stars) with rich clients who would pay up to $25,000 a night for their “services”.

The escort service was busted by the FBI, and the Rolling Stone article lists the names of several of Nici’s escorts – one of whom is WWE Diva Ashley Massaro. There is a picture of Ashley in the article and she’s listed as a WWE star and Playboy cover girl.

It’s important to note that there was no explicit implication that Ashley ever had sex for money. We are simply stating the facts – that she was among the women involved in the high-priced escort service.

This Or That: Who Did It Better? (10/28/2014)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlargh will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

Which new wrestling program are you more likely to watch?

    Lucha Underground – 73%, British Bootcamp 2 – 27%

Which rumored WWE return would you interest you more?

    Chris Jericho – 55%, The Boogeyman – 45%

    Better PWG commentary legend?

    Kevin Steen – 52%, Chuck Taylor – 48%

    Better bear?

Grizzly Bear– 51%, Polar bear – 49% (Grizzly bears won by one vote)

Better frog splash: Eddie Guerrero or Rob Van Dam?

    Flying high.

    eddiervd-splash

    Tim:

While Eddie Guerrero’s frog splash had a certain grace to it I was always enamored with Rob Van Dam’s frog splash more. The height, the distance, the style, and the way he sold that it hurt him as well after impact with the bounce. It was so perfect. He doesn’t do it with that amount of style but he has far and away the best frog splash I’ve ever seen on a consistent basis throughout his career. The frog splash can be one of the most beautiful wrestling moves when done right and both of these guys had it down to a science but Rob Van Dam had a way of mixing style and realism almost flawlessly.

    Rob Van Dam

    Joey:

Fun fact: The frog splash is my favorite top rope move!

Eddie Guerrero had a more accurate and effective frog splash that was a thing of beauty. From a realistic point of view, he would hit it and pin the opponent instantly. RVD’s would have more elevation and would sell that extra height by not going for the pin right away.

Even so, I’m going to have to side with Rob Van Dam. Before seeing RVD in ECW, I felt like I watched wrestling in black and white then Van Dam showed me the beauty of color with his unique move set that was so far out of the realm of what I knew of in my wrestling world. The Five Star Frog Splash and the crazy elevation he got was a big part of it.  I hate ending this with a bad pun but RVD just got higher and it was glorious.

    Rob Van Dam

    Tom:

Pretty disgusting that D’Lo Brown isn’t an option here. ANYWAY. Even with how sluggish he’s gotten in all his recent returns, there’s still a part of me that will always be an RVD mark. He was my number one favourite guy for a good couple of years (so I’m completely biased here) and I think his frog splash just looks that much more devastating than Eddie’s. Eddie’s might be prettier, but that Rob Van Dam is DENSE, y’know? Dense like a muffin. Imagine a big old muffin man landing on you, forget it.

    Rob Van Dam

    This Or That (4/21/2014)

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlackett will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

More likely to eventually end Daniel Bryan’s title reign?

    Brock Lesnar – 65%, John Cena – 35%

    Better WWE era premise?

The Reality Era – 75%, The Attitude Era – 25%

    Cooler mask?

Wyatt Family sheep mask – 64%, The Shield’s new entrance mask – 36%

    Bigger disgrace?

    Wrestling’s GreenLanternFan – 60%, The Green Lantern movie – 40%

More likely to succeed: Adam Rose or Bo Dallas?

Which NXT call-up and former Sexy Wrestler of the Week has a better chance?

    adam-bo

    Tim:

I don’t see either going anywhere. I think Adam Rose will have a fan base for a short few months only to live in Fandango territory. Bo will have a little longer longevity because there is more to get out of his gimmick but once they try moving him away from it or changing it at all from it’s NXT formula Bo will sink. It is the only thing that can work for him and eventually it will get tired and they’ll change it. I don’t see Bo being tolerable in any other form.

I think they could eventually reinvent Rose and it work for him. Moreso than reinventing Bo Dallas would work, anyway. I think WWE showing a video package of their NXT days kind of explaining the characters would help a lot. It definitely would have with Emma.

    Adam Rose

    Joey:

In almost any other era of wrestling, I think both gimmicks would fail hard but things are different now. I say it lovingly but the fan base is consisting of a more smark fan base of hipster types. The Wyatt Family has become a phenomenon with a gimmick that many were skeptical of and I can see both happening here.

That being said, I’m going with Adam Rose. His party gimmick is more universal and easy to understand. The delusional Bo Dallas BOLIEVE gimmick started due to the fans at NXT organically beginning to get sick of him. I think it could work out but it will be more difficult to get it across properly. Rose will get over and he has a bonus in that Triple H seemingly loves his upside.

    Adam Rose

    Tom:

Very tough to say! Neither guy seems to have any obvious longevity with their current gimmicks, especially given how similarly extravagant characters who’ve been bumped up form NXT in recent years (like Fandango and Sandow) have since been toned down and/or shunted to the side for the most part.

Honestly, Bo’s saving grace might be his status as the brother of Bray Wyatt and the fact that we’re currently in the midst of the sensational REALITY ERA. His motivational speaker shtick might not last, but just wait until they start blurring the lines of reality and fiction to make him the Kane to Bray’s ‘Taker! THEY COULD EVEN BRING IN IRS AS THE PAUL BEARER FIGURE, IT ALL WORKS.

Life Lessons Learned from Wrestlers Guest Starring on Sitcoms

From Vader to Rob Van Dam, The Rock to Billy Gunn, wrestlers have made some amazing guest appearances on sitcoms over the years – here are some of our favorites, along with the valuable life lessons you should take away from each one.

Here to wallow in nostalgia with you are site regulars @typicalROHfan and @TomBlackett. Apologies for some of the video links being crappy quality or hosted on weird streaming sites, but YouTube has been ruthless in removing a lot of these historic moments from public consumption.

    Vader on Boy Meets World

    typicalROHfan:

The loveable Cory Matthews joins the school wrestling team in hopes of creating a legacy. He defeats high Frankie Stecchino’s partner-in-bullying Joey ‘The Rat’ Epstein in a regulated match. This leads to an UN-sanctioned rematch after school hours as Griff (now known in 2013 as Ben Wyatt on Parks and Rec) books a show and promotes it.

Griff gets celebrities Robert Goulet and Yasmine Bleeth to appear. Frankie and his dad, Vader, join Joey the Rat making it 3 vs. 1. As it looks bleak for Cory, Mr. Feeny appears and shuts down Vader to save Mr. Matthews. It’s revealed that Vader’s kayfabe real name was Leslie.

Adam Scott/Ben Wyatt/School Hooligan Griff is such a joy in this episode. He represents every shady wrestling promoter except more savvy. The match itself was better worked than the main event of Wrestlemania 27.

    Tom:

WE LOVE VADER. He’s honestly pretty incredible in all his Boy Meets World appearances and it’s amazing that they made him a recurring character. Between this and his appearance in ‘Fist of the North Star‘, the mid-90s truly was Vader time.

Lesson learned: Cory vs. The Vader Family drew more fans than the average indie show. Continue reading

Match of the Week: Disco Inferno & Alex Wright vs. Kevin Nash & Lex Luger (WCW Nitro, 07/13/1998)

Many sites have a match of the week but ours is a little different. These matches are the ones that are fun to watch… in the non-traditional way.

This week, we’ve chosen Disco Inferno & Alex Wright vs. Kevin Nash & Lex Luger from the July 13th, 1998 episode of WCW Monday Nitro. Members of the site @TimWelcomed, @typicalROHfan and @TomBlackett give their (lack of) expertise on the action.

    Part 1: The entrances.

    alex-wright

    Tim:

There are legitimately very few things that make me have that exact same feeling that I did on Monday nights as a WCW-raised child quite like seeing that entrance-way and hearing Disco Inferno‘s theme hit. It’s the weirdest thing. Then there was one of my personal favorites. Alex Wright. The entrance dance was never weird to me as a kid for some reason but Disco Inferno’s was. I used to like to chase my cat around with a broomstick when I was a kid. Oh…what? You’re not my psychiatrist? Sorry. Back to the match. Here comes “The Wolfpac.” These jobbers never made any money and thank God they’re not around anymore, unlike Wright and Inferno.

    typicalROHfan:

Disco Inferno and Alex Wright come out with great entrance themes, great dance moves and great outfits. After being robbed the night before, Disco is giving a five star promo. “The lemon and lime, step on a dime, bust a rhyme, it’s your duty to shake your booty dance party” is a t-shirt that should have been made. WCW missing the boat obviously.

Here comes the Wolfpac. Konnan the jinx (he ruined everything in WCW), Lex Luger in black pants, Kevin Nash aka “Big Goof” in the words of Disco and Pizza-Face Sting. Nash does his usual bit with a weirdly raspy voice. Did Dean Ambrose do voice over work on this?

    Tom:

Alex Wright is amazing. Is it okay if I only write about how amazing he is? Because SERIOUSLY, in a match that involves Kevin Nash, Lex Luger, Sting, Konnan and Disco ‘Daniel Bryan will never make money’ Inferno, he’s the absolute stand-out on every level. I felt genuinely angry during his entrance that they cut away to some goon in a pink shirt ‘raising the roof’ and we were deprived of Wright’s amazing dance for a few seconds.

I watched very little WCW during the Monday Night Wars, so was he always this good, or did things go drastically downhill when they shaved his head and repackaged him as Berlynnnn (or however they spelled it)? Plz reply ASAP, thx. Continue reading

The Merch Table: It Came From eBay

Wrestling companies make merchandise. It’s usually pretty bad, but sometimes, it’s terrible. Welcome to The Merch Table.

Every week, @TomBlargh will look at some of the awful merch that someone expects you to buy. Up this week: IT CAME FROM EBAY.

It was only a matter of time, really. If Highspots is a lake of questionable merch, then eBay’s an ocean. I can’t possibly hope to cover everything in one column, but hopefully this gives you a taste of what the world’s biggest garage sale has to offer in terms of wrestling merchandise. LET’S GET STARTED.

    WWF Hulk Hogan Sleeping Bag

So, you’re planning a sleepover. What’s the first thing you need to get? A SLEEPING BAG, DUH. Where are you gonna get one? EBAY, OF COURSE! Buying a used sleeping bag is BETTER than buying a new one because it’s already got that lived-in feel and smell!

So you start searching around, seeing what’s out there and OH JESUS CHRIST WHAT IS THAT

    hogan-sleeping1

…okay, woah, it’s just this listing’s featured picture of a Hulk Hogan sleeping bag.

    hogan-sleeping2

I have literally no idea why they would choose that first picture as the one to really sell it, but hey, it got my attention (mostly because it reminded me of this though):

    sutherland-invasion

So yeah, maybe not the best picture to use after all. Continue reading
