Around The Wrestling World In 7 Days: April 5, 2015

Every weekend, Joey will give a glimpse of the things that have entered his mind.

Hi. I have a lot of thoughts about wrestling. I decided to start a concept where I talk about what’s on my mind every weekend. I hope it’s enjoyable.

Follow me on Twitter and let me know if you want me to hit on any wrestling topics next week: @JoeySplashwater

    Wrestlemania

Wow was I wrong about Wrestlemania 31. I had very low expectations for the show but it completely over-delivered. The entire show entertained me from top to bottom with every match having something that entertained me to some extent. If I were to rank the show after watching it just twice, I’d say it’s only behind 17, 19, 30 and maybe 24 among the best overall Wrestlemania shows of all time.

WWE Wrestlemania 31 Preview and Predictions

    Wrestlemania is here. We think.

Giving their thoughts and predictions on what to expect from the PPV are members of the site @JoeySplashwater, @TimWelcomed, @IndianDeathlock and @TomBlargh.

Cesaro and Tyson Kidd vs. The Usos vs. The New Day vs. Los Matadores for the WWE Tag Team Championship on the pre-show

    Joey:

Cesaro and utility player wrestler with manager vs. The Usos vs. Los Matadores returning to PPV after being non-existent for months vs. a team you won’t remember in a year from now on the pre-show for the tag team titles. Shades of last year. Except less hope for Cesaro. The match should be fine if the Usos are healthy.

    Interest Level: 6/10
Prediction: Cesaro and Tyson Kidd win.

    Tim:

Oh damn. It’s time for The T Man to dish out some very self-indulgent hot takes! This should be a good match but it will feel hollow as most WWE tag team matches do. The typical stuff. It’ll be solid. It’ll have some spots we’ve seen a million times before. Cesaro and Tyson Kidd would be a great tag team if being a tag team meant anything in WWE besides “filler.” The Usos are fantastic but we’ve seen them wrestle every combination of these teams so many times. Los Matadores have a horrible gimmick and haven’t really done much lately. I feel awful for The New Day. This is the most pre-show pre-show match you could imagine for Wrestlemania. I think Cesaro and Kidd win here. I’m sure they’ll eventually bring prestige to these belts once and for all if they hold them long enough!

    Interest Level: 5/10
Prediction: Cesaro and Tyson Kidd win.

    Deathlock:

This will be fun and get us jazzed for the show. It’ll be fine!

Interest Level: 6/10 Strong Style Interest Points™
Prediction: CATS, FACTS, AND MINORU SUZUKI COSPLAY FOR THE WIN.

    Tom:

It’ll be good, y’know? Y’KNOW? Yeah, you know.

    Interest Level: 5/10
Prediction: Cesaro and Tyson Kidd win.

Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal on the pre-show

    Joey:

Does anyone in the world care about this? Noteworthy predictions: Curtis Axel will be eliminated first. Big Show and Kane will double eliminate each other. Sandow will eliminate Miz. Sheamus returns and wins.

    Interest Level: 2/10
    Prediction: Sheamus wins.

    Tim:

A ring full of dorks, Sandow, and an NXT guy. GOOD STUFF. Showcase of The Immortals and all of that jazz, ya know? Best case scenario, it ends up with just Sandow and Miz left in the ring leading to Sandow throwing Miz out. Most probable scenario, Sheamus returns and wins.

    Interest Level: 3/10
    Prediction: Sheamus wins.

    Deathlock:

Hi, I dunno who’s in this match at all. Is this the part where I tell you that If I ran the WWE, Damien Sandow would be on a record-breaking title run right now?

    Interest Level: 5/10
    Prediction: Damien Sandow?

    Tom:

If they have Sheamus return to win a pre-show battle royal then el oh fucking el, welcome to the Reality Era, fella. I look forward to seeing how the enormous trophy is destroyed.

    Interest Level: 6/10
    Prediction: Mizdow wins.

AJ Lee and Paige vs. The Bella Twins

    Joey:

The four noteworthy divas in the company will have a chance this year. This is probably the best divas match option they could have went with to be honest. I think it will be one of the better matches on the show – not sure if that says more about this match or the full card.

    Interest Level: 6/10
    Prediction: AJ and Paige wins.

    Tim:

I still believe AJ is the best female wrestler in WWE. Paige is wonderful but I still don’t think she’s close to hitting her stride on the main roster and that’s not entirely her fault. Nikki Bella has grown a lot as a personality and a wrestler but I still don’t think she is that wonderful. Brie Bella is Brie Bella. I’ve seen potential in her a lot here and there but it’s a one step forward, two steps back kind of thing with her. Popularity-wise this is definitely the four WWE should showcase at the biggest show of the year. Will it be the best divas match WWE could put on? No way. There’s definitely a chance these four could do something entertaining though.

    Interest Level: 5/10
    Prediction: AJ and Paige win.

    Deathlock:

Thirty seconds, probably humiliating. It might even just get cut from the show so Triple H’s entrance can go longer.

Interest Level: -10/10 regular points, 10/10 Strong Style Interest Points™ for Nikki Bella’s elbow.
    Prediction: We all lose.

    Tom:

“Fearless” Nicole Bella is here to show all you candyasses that girls are doing it for themselves! Holla at your girl! I don’t know, I’m sick of seeing all of these girls compete in various different combinations. It’s all we’ve seen in PPV Divas matches for the last year and I want some variety.

    Interest Level: 3/10
Prediction: April Jeanette “Ape” Lee-Mendez-Punker-Brooks and Paige win.

Top 10 Potential Wrestlemania Chants During Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar

Let’s face it. It’s going to get ugly.

    wm

If Royal Rumble was bad, imagine 50,000 fans with a large portion of the attendees being diehard wrestling fans traveling from all around the world. The best case for the WWE is that the acoustics in the building are off or it’s hard to get chants heard on TV in such a large stadium. There’s no scenario in which the fans at Wrestlemania 31 accept this match without attempts to “hijack” the show and entertain themselves, especially if Brock Lesnar is leaving the WWE following this match and it leaks.

I wanted to find a way to make a game out of this to find some form of entertainment for myself when watching Wrestlemania. I’m not sure if there’s one I can make out of it aside from the tired cliche of a shot game but here’s the 10 most interesting possible chants.

    1. Daniel Bryan

The obvious and most likely chant. A large portion of WWE fans don’t want to quit on the Daniel Bryan dreams no matter how many times WWE tries to erase him from relevancy as a Wyatt lackey or an opening match ladder climber. With the way Royal Rumble went, fans are more prone to being self aware and knowing what makes TV. I can see a scenario where there’s one 20 minute long “Daniel Bryan” chant throughout the entire match.

    2. CM Punk

The opposite road to the Daniel Bryan chant. If the show is ugly before the main event, fans may be in a more bitter mood and a chant that would be more hostile than “Daniel Bryan” is the never forgotten “CM Punk.” No word yet on if WWE will sue Colt Cabana for the Punk chants.

Conversely, this may be the time the trolling fans get an AJ Lee chant going as a humorous turn from all the times CM Punk was chanted during her matches.

    WWE Fastlane Preview and Predictions

“Fastlane is one word, pal.” – Vince McMahon

Giving their thoughts and predictions on what to expect from the PPV are members of the site @JoeySplashwater, @TimWelcomed, @IndianDeathlock and @TomBlargh.

The Usos w/Naomi vs. Cesaro and Tyson Kidd w/Nattie for the WWE Tag Team Championship

    Joey:

Cesaro and Tyson Kidd are obviously excellent. The Usos are probably the most underrated wrestlers in WWE right now. Naomi and Nattie are doing good work adding to this feud. I love this. I understand there will probably be a 4 team tag title match at Wrestlemania to get more people on the card but I’d love for these to have a straight up rematch on Wrestlemania with 5-10 minutes to steal the show. This will likely be the match of the night.

    Interest Level: 9/10
    Prediction: The Usos win.

    Tim:

This is WWE Fastlane. It’s all about revving engines the engines of the WWE Universe and I definitely think this match-up between these speedsters will do just that! The Usos are like NASCAR cars (NASCARS? Is that the thing?) They are fun to watch and fast but definitely have some restrictor plates holding them back and keeping them the on same level as the others. Tyson Kid is like a fast car. He’s really good and entertaining. Cesaro is a classic muscle car that only gets better with time. I think I may have mixed up muscle cars and wine there but I’m sticking with it. This will be a fun match.

    Interest Level: 7/10
Prediction: Cesaro and Tyson Kidd win.

    Deathlock:

AWESOME. As much as it feels like “Oh, another Usos match” (the tag team problem in WWE is not the Usos’ fault) every time an Usos match happens, this one will be fun. That segment in the restaurant when Nattie and Naomi were trying to go on a double date was the best piece of non-ring programming on WWE television in a decade. “I thought you meant like Canadian doubles in tennis.” “You gotta tell me that Japan story.” “Fact. We don’t have some stupid catch phrase.” “Come on, nobody likes what the Usos do.”  BRAWL. Why does Jimmy call everyone Uce? What does that mean? Enlighten me, internet. If the match is half as good as this segment, it’s five stars.

    Interest Level: 8/10
    Prediction: TAKE IT, CESAROGUN.

    Tom:

First of all, the name of the show is “WWE Race Cars”, get it right! Also, is this on the preshow or the main show? I’ve not been paying attention at all, oh well.

Anyway, Cesaro and old Tyson Kidd are a good laugh, though The Usos… well, The Usos remain The Usos. That’s not a diss, I like them! It’s just tough to work up energy for their matches right now, though Naomi being added as their manager is p. good stuff. She seems like a lovely girl.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: The Usos win.

    This Or That (2/4/2015)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlargh will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

    Better 2015 match?

Nakamura vs. Ibushi at Wrestle Kingdom – 51%, Lesnar vs. Rollins vs. Cena at Royal Rumble – 49%

    Better Royal Rumble crowd?

    Philadelphia in 2015 – 65%, Pittsburgh in 2014 – 35%

Who booed wrestler did you feel worse for?

    Rey Mysterio in 2014 – 61%, The New Day in 2015 – 39%

Who will win the Super Bowl?

    Dan Marino – 52%, Seattle Seahawks – 34%, New England Patriots – 14%

Who will leave Wrestlemania 31 as champ: Roman Reigns or anyone else?

Reigns or the field (Brock Lesnar/Daniel Bryan/Seth Rollins). Who will leave as champ?

    roman

    Tim:

WWE is in such a self-made clusterfuck here. I don’t think they’re pulling back on Reigns even though they should so I see him beating Daniel Bryan at Fastlane. This will make things worse for Reigns. Do they turn him heel? Because at that point he might as well be. I don’t see Lesnar staying so he will be losing the belt at Wrestlemania.

The whole match will have a very odd atmosphere as Lesnar is leaving and Reigns is not accepted by as many people as they want. The only thing I think they can do to make Wrestlemania end on a somewhat better note is have Rollins cash-in. Preferably somewhere in the middle of the match where he thinks he can win and then they both get up making the last half a triple threat or something.

Will they do it and not end on Roman Reigns being supreme ruler of all things? I don’t know. I think they will most likely have their hand pushed to actually fix this whole mess by then.

    Anyone else

    Joey:

Let’s go through an order of elimination – unfortunately I think Roman Reigns is defeating Daniel Bryan at Fast Lane so that eliminates him. I do not think there’s a chance Brock Lesnar leaves Wrestlemania as champ so he’s gone as well. I’m essentially choosing between Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. I’ll side with Rollins here as Reigns will get booed out of the building at Wrestlemania and his cash in would be the perfect back-up plan.

Rollins cashing in at Wrestlemania would cement him as the smartest Money in the Bank briefcase holder. Reigns would beat Lesnar in Vince McMahon’s dream scenario and still look strong (lol) so I can see this being the middle ground for WWE.

    Anyone else

    Tom:

Man… I really get the feeling that they’d hate to be seen as buckling to fan pressure SO they’re just gonna stay on track with Reigns. It’s going to be a VERY weird ending to ‘Mania but ending the show with Rollins cashing in to a huge face reacton probably wouldn’t do anyone any favours, even though I’d be much more interested seeing him as champion.

I dunno, man! If I had to guess how it all plays out, Reigns wins without shenanigans at ‘Mania, Rollins cashes in by Extreme Rules, Reigns ends up a heel by Summerslam and they mostly give up on old Roman by ‘Mania 32.

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

Which wrestler are you more excited to see return from time off?

    Daniel Bryan  – 82%, Dean Ambrose – 18%

Which TNA free agent would you rather see return to WWE?

    Kurt Angle – 76%, Bully Ray – 24%

    Cooler Young Bucks move?

More Bang For Your Buck – 59%, Meltzer Driver – 41%

    Better fall clothing item?

    Hoodie – 91%, Scarf – 9%

Who will have more WWE World Heavyweight title reigns in 2015: Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins COMBINED or Roman Reigns?

Is the future The Roman Empire or do the other Shield members have a chance to pass Reigns?

    shield

    Tim:

As much as I like to hope WWE won’t stay the course with Reigns, I really think they are going to stick to it. Reigns will win the title at Wrestlemania 30 and hold the belt once or twice throughout the course of 2015. I am willing to bet that Rollins and Ambrose will never once hold the gold in 2015. My faith in WWE creative may be at or near an all-time low recently. Hell, we may even get a Big Show or Kane feud against Reigns. Exciting times ahead…

    Roman Reigns

    Joey:

My expectations are for plans to stay in motion and Roman Reigns will defeat Brock Lesnar to win the title at Wrestlemania. Rollins will try to cash in right after the match as his sell being that he wants “the Wrestlemania moment” over his ex partner but Roman will also defeat him to start his reign. (Pun intended.)

If anyone beats Reigns eventually afterwards, it will probably be Cena or Bryan. Those three and Brock are the four that will be title holders in 2015 as I see Ambrose moving down the card a little after his feud with Rollins ends and the same happening to Rollins eventually though both will have big roles. Sorry, Ambrosebuds. It’s sadly The Roman Empire in 2015.

    Roman Reigns

    Tom:

It’s really tough to imagine Reigns being given a long run as champ. If I had to guess, I think he’ll have it from around Wrestlemania to Summerslam, at which point the crowd will have turned on him to the point that he’ll drop it to Daniel Bryan (assuming he’s healthy), and then maybe we’ll get Bryan feuding with Rollins and Ambrose to make post-Summerslam WWE worth a damn for once. This is all dumb fantasy booking though, so shut the fuck up, Tom.

I dunno, man. It seems inevitable that Rollins will get a run once he cashes in the briefcase, but I really can’t picture him holding it for long or Ambrose being the one to take it from him. I’m desperately trying to find a way to say Rollins and Ambrose here! It seems unlikely, but you know what? I’m just gonna DARE TO DREAM TO BELIEVE that those precious darlings will find a way to overcome The Roman Empire.

Should the WWE champion ever be a “part time” wrestler?

    Yes – 82%, No – 18%

    Lower moment from Raw?

    Megan Miller – 70%, “Deportlandia” – 30%

Which birthday party would you rather attend?

    Billy Kidman’s – 60%, Hulk Hogan’s – 40%

More loved Robin Williams ’90s family film?

    Jumanji – 53%, Mrs. Doubtfire – 47%

Who would you rather see face Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 31: Roman Reigns or The Rock?

They’re cousins or something, and also two of the most likely opponents for Brock at ‘Mania, but which one would you rather see Lesnar face?

    rock-roman-reigns

    Tim:

Can I pick neither? I just don’t feel like watching either match. I do believe the right choice is to have an up-and-comer take down the monster that is Lesnar but to really maximize on it the guy would have to be able to make you sympathize with him (like Daniel Bryan…). Reigns does not have this. He hasn’t looked to good without The Shield and has not given me one reason to believe he can carry the company.

A potential match with The Rock would be excruciatingly boring but if that means Lesnar wins I say this is the way to go until you find the right person to beat Lesnar. It would be a shame to waste such a potentially huge star-making moment on someone who will flounder out.

    The Rock

    Joey:

I have to go with my main man The “Dwayne” Rock as the kids on the internet like to call him. These two had a match at Summerslam 2002 that was one of my favorite matches of all time. A rare match I can watch from childhood or teen years today and not feel the need to fast forward when watching.

Obviously the match wouldn’t be as good as they were both 12 years younger and active wrestlers but at least I’ve seen these two have a good match before. I’m still waiting for a very good Roman Reigns singles match. Also, Rock vs. Brock is the biggest money match WWE can do so I’ll take the spectacle with potential to be memorable over the one that’s based around hoping Reigns is the next guy and nothing more than wishful thinking.

    The Rock

    Tom:

I still think The Rock has another special match in him – he’s certainly not the guy I most want to see fight Brock, but I’d be interested. Meanwhile, I think Roman Reigns is a good two or three years away from being even CLOSE to capable of having a match with Lesnar that’s anything more than the snoozefests Brock had with Triple H.

    John Cena – 61%, Roman Reigns – 39%

Better place-holder heel to win MITB?

    Alberto Del Rio – 74%, Randy Orton – 26%

    Stardust.

    Yay – 76%, Nay – 24%

    Better sport?

    Hockey – 63%, Soccer – 27%

Which ladder match are you more excited for: WWE Championship match or MITB briefcase match?

One’s for the title, one’s for the briefcase, but which do you care about most?

    mitb

    Tim:

I think the real Money In The Bank briefcase match is going to be a lot more fun to watch strictly from a wrestling perspective and seeing who will win. You’ll have Kofi Kingston who can deliver some fun spots, Dolph Ziggler who will go all out, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose in the ring together, and Wade Barrett throwin’ some ‘bows. Sounds great to me!

The six-man ladder match for the title has a lot of potential to tell some interesting stories and be a hotbed for future feuds, however they haven’t made me care about it. I don’t care too much about any wrestler in that match outside of Cesaro. I’m already dreading the upcoming year full of Roman Reigns Is Almighty. Added to all of this was the Kane nonsense so I completely checked out. Kane has the power to make me not care about anything. But here’s to hoping it is an interesting match.

    MITB briefcase match

    Joey:

The ascension of Roman Reigns, the potential of Cesaro, the star power of John Cena and the fact that the actual title was on the line would have made the WWE Championship ladder match the clear choice but the corny go home segment of Kane attacking everyone just took so much out of it for me. At least the briefcase match has enough talented guys who can utilize the ladders more than the main eventers plus there’s an actual reason to care about Rollins vs. Ambrose as opposed to any interaction of the main event.

    MITB briefcase match

    Tom:

I think the show on Sunday should be a really fun time, not that the announcements and additions last night did much to get me excited for it, the worst of those being Kane being placed as such a key part of the WWE Championship. Fuck you, Kane! Go home! We don’t want you anymore! The match should still be fantastic, but now I can almost imagine Kane winning the bloody thing, just so Bryan can get his revenge and win the title from him at Summerslam.

As for the MITB briefcase match, while I think the Rollins / Ambrose dynamic will be tremendous, the rest of the guys in that match really do seem like a lot of filler. I guess that’s typical for a MITB match though, so having guys like Ziggler and Kofi go crashing around as they get caught between Sexy Seth and Dangerous Dean, Troubled Teen should be a good time.

ROH Best In The World – 88%, TNA Slammiversary – 12%

    Microsoft – 63%, Sony – 37%

Who will have more WWE World Championship reigns in the next 3 years: John Cena or Roman Reigns?

Who will dominate the title picture over the next three years? Does Cena finally have competition for the spot as golden boy?

    maxresdefault

    Tim:

I can see Roman Reigns having a single longer run as champ but Cena will hold the belt more times. I think they’ll do anything they can to make Reigns the next face of the company but it’s going to take time. I’m curious to see if they book him well after he finally wins the title. WWE isn’t very good at that.

    John Cena

    Joey:

This one is interesting and the question within it is if Roman Reigns will hold Cena’s spot as the face of the company going forward. After last night’s RAW and seeing the crowd go crazy for his win to enter MITB, I’m more fascinated than ever to see what happens with Reigns future. I actually think he can do it and break the 9 year streak Cena has going of being “the guy” in WWE.

Don’t get me wrong. His act will eventually be tiring as the ultimate babyface or “Superman” who is very protected but I can see him withstanding that storm and connecting with the majority of the WWE fans. Plus he has more of a “bad ass” personality that will have a lot of the male fans craving for him to overtake Cena. Reigns will be “the guy” starting next Wrestlemania for a long time after.

    Roman Reigns

    Tom:

While I think old R-Double might end up being champion for a longer period of time over the next three years, I think it’s still Cena who’ll end up with the greater number of individual reigns. He’s the guy the title goes to whenever there’s a meltdown and things get reset, and I don’t see that changing any time soon.

While I think Reigns will have a pretty long tenure as champ when he finally does get the belt, I don’t think he’ll be in the position of ‘go-to guy’ for a while. It’s still so, SO early to make any judgements, but FUCK IT: Roman Reigns, I judge thee unworthy to lead the Cenation. Six months in the cubes, creep.

First off, here’s last week’s results:

    Better yearly PPV?

    Royal Rumble – 65%, Wrestlemania – 35%

    More exciting potential WM feud?

Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar – 56%, Triple H vs. CM Punk – 44%

More likely to hold a TNA title by the end of 2014?

    American Wolves – 88%, Sting – 12%

    Better to visit?

    Zoos – 65%, Aquariums – 35%

Lamer rumored Wrestlemania match: Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus or Batista vs. Randy Orton?

Both matches seem likely with the rumored Wrestlemania plans starting last night. What match pisses you off more?

    sheamus-bryan-batista-orton

    Tim:

They are both awful matches to even have to think about but I am going to go with Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus.  Daniel Bryan and Sheamus can have great matches. They had one of my favorite 2 Out Of 3 Falls matches at Extreme Rules 2012. It was even my favorite Sheamus match ever. However, Daniel Bryan is WAY too hot right now to be saddled wrestling someone like Sheamus on the biggest stage of them all. Not to mention that Sheamus as a character is always extremely annoying.

There are three things that could happen here.

1: Sheamus wins. Oh god… That is scary.

2: Daniel Bryan gets his revenge and beats Sheamus in 18 seconds or less. It would make the most sense with their history but would totally leave us without a decent Daniel Bryan match.

3: Daniel Bryan defeats Sheamus in a decent match that doesn’t get enough time because of all of the other “high-profile” matches.

    Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus

    typicalROHfan:

Before giving my answer, Randy Orton vs. Batista is my nightmare. It consists of my two least favorite performers of the last era in terms of many facets I will explain in a piece closer to Wrestlemania. That being said, my answer has to be Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus.

Bryan’s red hot buzz was sabotaged to make sure he stays in that 2nd tier position on the card with guys like Sheamus, Alberto Del Rio and The Big Show. The only problem with that was the fans have started to revolt and treat him as if he’s THE guy. You’d assume with the last 6 months that he’d have a title program or face someone like The Undertaker or John Cena. Nope. It’s Sheamus. Fucking Sheamus. Unless plans change the fans at live shows push their hands, what an absolute waste and slap in the face to wrestling fans.

    Tom:

It’s a tough one to call – Orton / Batista is undoubtedly the match that I want to see less, but there’s something incredibly depressing about the idea of Bryan wrestling Sheamus at Wrestlemania for the third time in four years, even if the first two times barely count. I really loved their two out of three falls match at Extreme Rules 2012 but after the year Bryan’s had, is this the best they can manage for him?

Having said that, Batista vs. Orton main eventing a Wrestlemania in 2014 is a massive pile of shit, so I’m forced to pick that.
