All Aboard the S.S. Strong Style: G1 Climax 25 – Day 2 Recap

Shelly Deathlock cares too much about Japanese wrestling and, as Captain of the S.S. Strong Style, she’s here to welcome you on board and fill you in on what’s going on in the world of puro. In this series, she’s talking about the G1 25.

Hello everyone this is your captain speaking: Welcome to the recap for the G1 25 Climax DAY 2 show. This was a fixed camera show with no commentary and is available on NJPWWorld.

I’m not going to recap every match on every show, but I will pull out bits of shows to say some words about as necessary so you can be caught up on my opinions!

    G1 Climax 25 Day 2: Non-tournament matches

Tiger Mask & Jushin Liger vs. Jay White & Yohei Komatsu

Jay White’s missile dropkick, holy crap you guys.

Mascara Dorada, Tetsuya Naito, & Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Ryusuke Taguchi, Katsuyori Shibata, & Hiroyoshi Tenzan

The Naito/Shibata interaction in this match got me really excited for their match tomorrow where Shibata will be his normal bored self unless he’s inflicting pain, and Naito will be his newfound bored heel self who is trying desperately not to give a fuck.

    G1 Climax 25 Day 2 – Block B: Results & Review

I’ll give some quick tips here about whether or not you should take time to watch these if you haven’t, based on my own knowledge and taste in professional wrestling.

    Satoshi Kojima vs. Tomohiro Ishii

This was pretty good, but I don’t think it lived up to all the furor of their post-match interaction from Day 1 that set this match up. The other day, it was like Kojima said something bad about Ishii’s mama and Ishii was going to murder him. During the match, they’re their usual intense selves and they do the chops and the suplexes and it’s good, but I wish there had been more attempted murder involved.

Should you watch this? If you like chops & suplexes & tough guys.

    Winner: ISHII Continue reading

    The Jeer Section: Debut Edition

Wrestlers say and do ridiculous things.

Every week, we’ll recap the top few of the most terrible or silly acts perpetrated by wrestlers as we enter The Jeer Section.

    Velvet Sky

In the latest news of TNA talent publicly making insensitive comments, Velvet Sky stated her displeasure for the celebration of Caitlyn Jenner being acknowledged as an acceptance of transgender people.

Jenner was given an award for courage by ESPN at their ESPY Awards last week resulting in the following thoughts by Sky:

    sky

    sky2

Sky and her boyfriend Bully Ray constantly complain about the “political correctness” of Twitter especially in the aftermath of social media’s reaction to her comments and are striking back by selling t-shirts that say “Go Fuck Your Selfie.” You have to love pro wrestling.

Yes!: My Improbable Journey To The Main Event Of WrestleMania (Wrestling On Earth Review)

We all read the new Daniel Bryan book. Here are our thoughts.

Wrestling On Earth perennial favorite Daniel Bryan wrote a book chronicling his life and career leading to his historic Wrestlemania XXX main event victory. The kind folks at St. Martin’s Press were kind enough to send @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlargh copies for reviewing purposes.

Considering there are three of us and already many other reviews out there, we decided to just answer some of the most significant questions giving each of our perspectives and feelings on the book.

You can get the book now at your local book stores or just order it on Amazon. Alternatively, request it at your local library to spite Lance Storm.

    bryan

    1. What did you like most about the book?

    Tim:

I love wrestlers telling stories that involve other wrestlers and there are plenty of those in this book. Bryan’s humble honesty sets a different tone to these kinds of stories than most wrestling books.

    Joey:

As Daniel Bryan is my favorite wrestler of all time, I liked that he opened himself up and gave us an honest glimpse into his career and life. Just learning more about who he is, what’s important and how he looks at the world was the most fascinating thing about this book. In terms of purely the wrestling, he’s as honest as possible and gives his genuine feelings on things without being bitter or negative.

    Tom:

Bryan’s general attitude towards the wrestling business and life in general won’t come as a surprise to anyone, but it’s still refreshing to see it articulated. He doesn’t have a vindictive bone in his body and he seems able to put any bitterness he had in perspective, so it never seems like he has an agenda to bury anyone – he’s just giving his own honest perspective on things.

News for the Week of July 20, 2015

    WWE

    • To help bring back some of his old “attitude” The Big Show has been cutting off one shoulder strap from all of his attire.

    • WWE is considering replacing the “butterfly” Divas Championship with a new belt called “the Women’s Empowerment title” featuring a giant photo of Stephanie McMahon‘s face on it.

    • The Ascension have been trying to get Vince McMahon to notice them by showing off when he is around backstage. Last week, they did the “going down a fake flight of stairs” trick in front of his window to try getting a laugh from him.

    TNA

    • Bully Ray wants Velvet Sky to cut a “shoot promo” on her hatred of transgender people to “get ECW heat” and “pop a rating” next TV taping.

    • Dixie Carter has told WWE that she would sell the TNA library to them for a role on Total Divas. WWE declined the offer.

    • Bram actually keeps trying to resign from his TNA contract but he has poor reading comprehension skills.

All Aboard the S.S. Strong Style: G1 Climax 25 – Day 1 Recap

Hello lovelies. I hope you woke up at stupid o’clock for the opening match of the G1 Climax 25 tournament. If not, don’t worry, it’s up for on demand viewing at NJPWWorld. They’re wonderful to us.

I’m not going to recap every show, but I will pull out bits of shows to say some words about as necessary so you can be caught up on my opinions!

    G1 Climax 25 Day 1: Non-tournament matches

Yohei Komatsu, Tiger Mask, Jushin Liger, Yuji Nagata vs. Jay White, David Finlay, Mascara Dorada, Tomoaki Honma

Typical 8-or-10-man opening tag with legends & Young Lions. This match isn’t specifically a good one, but I’m just putting it here to make sure you know that this little pride of Young Lions (the boys who wrestle in black trunks and, when not wrestling, help out at ringside – those guys are like in “developmental” for NJPW and training at the dojo) is the cutest, most adorable pride of Young Lions ever and also very promising in-ring. Just look at them!

Yohei Komatsu, Jay White, David Finlay and Sho Tanaka (absent for this because he’s currently competing in the NOAH Junior league) are all currently great and only going to get better, and you should fall in love with them now so you can terrorize all your friends when they’re stars and say you told them so.

YOSHI-HASHI & Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Tama Tonga & Karl Anderson

Not really a great match but Shinsuke Nakamura was in it and at the end he mocked Karl Anderson’s machine gun taunt which was the spot of the night, honestly. Continue reading

Wade Barrett vs. R-Truth in a Battle for the Crown

    Joey:

Wade Barrett desperately needs to lose this to have any chance of being relevant again. I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news! (Get it???) Barrett is probably going to win this and continue being the goofy dude in a crown.

    Interest Level: 3/10
    Prediction: Wade Barrett wins.

    Tim:

Wade Barrett is a goof right now as the King of The Ring. He’ll probably always be booked as a goof at this point but hopefully this match was made to get him out of the gimmick. Realistically, this match was probably made to give him something to do and give him a win. I don’t care too much about this match.

    Interest Level: 3/10
    Prediction: Wade Barrett wins.

    Tom:

My goodness, what a way to start the show. I’m going to go against the grain here and say that Truth gets the win so he can continue doing his wacky king character to give him something to do, whereas Barrett can drop it and just do his best to go back to how things were before all this mess. Unlikely, but I think it’d be better for everybody.

    Interest Level: 2/10
    Prediction: R-Truth wins.

All Aboard the S.S. Strong Style: The G1 is Coming: Fashion Show

Shelly Deathlock cares too much about Japanese wrestling and, as Captain of the S.S. Strong Style, she’s here to welcome you on board and fill you in on what’s going on in the world of puro. In this series, she’s preparing for the G1 25.

Today was the day of the G1 Climax press conference, where all the guys turned up trying to look their best, as well as pose. Shelly covered New Japan’s finest fashion plates on Twitter, which we’ve collected below.

@TomBlargh is also going to weigh in because, having listened to every single episode of Josh Mathews’ Male Fashion Aficionado podcast, he is now EXTREMELY educated about fashion as it relates to wrestling. Let’s go!

    Tanahashi

    g1tanahashi

Deathlock: Tanahashi looks dapper in pinstripes, blue, & cream, but I don’t think diagonal stripes are legal.

Tom: The Ace of the Century. The Japanese Shawn Michaels. The state of that tie. I also think he should have done something different with his (admittedly beautiful) hair, given the formal attire. Maybe a hair clip, I don’t know.

    Togi Makabe

    g1togi

Deathlock: NEVER champ Togi Makabe wears his standard formal attire: suit, open shirt, chain. Very nice.

Tom: Your dad’s been kicked out by your mum again but he doesn’t give a FUCK.

    AJ Styles

    g1aj

Deathlock: AJ Styles wore jeans and a ballcap for the G124, so a suit, even without a tie, is a vast improvement.

Tom: How many hand gestures can one man do within the span of a few seconds? You just found out, baby, courtesy of Allan Jones Styles. Continue reading

Wednesday Night Wars: July 15, 2015

There’s a lot of wrestling on Wednesday nights.

Every week, @JoeySplashwater will attempt to watch as much of the wrestling programs on Wednesday night as he can. There will be a short recap of each program followed by the pick for Match of the Night, Performer of the Night and who won the Wednesday Night Wars?

    NXT

    NXT

This was one of the better episodes of NXT I’ve seen in a while. The opening tag match was enjoyable with the team of Jason Jordan and Chad Gable already looking like the best in that poor division. Blake and Murphy looked solid in their match too with Alexa Bliss helping them out tremendously.

NXT was main evented by Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks for the NXT Women’s Championship this week and it was perfect timing with the NXT female talent debuting on Raw this week. The match was pretty good and felt like the first important match on the NXT program in a long time. I loved the emotion at the end and I enjoyed the overall program. Best NXT episode in recent memory.

    Grade: B+

    This Or That (7/16/2015)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlargh will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

Better choice for Wrestler of the Year?

    John Cena – 79%, Roderick Strong – 21%

    Would you rather?

Have Brock Lesnar throw a car door in your section – 69%, Watch a 20 minute Sheamus vs. Roman Reigns match live – 31%

More likely to main event a PPV in 2015?

    Cesaro – 85%, Dolph Ziggler – 15%

    Better ice cream truck item?

Firecracker Popsicle – 66%, WWF Ice Cream Bar – 34%

Who do you side with in their podcast war: Steve Austin or Roddy Piper?

    Wrestling podcasts.

    piper-austin

    Tim:

They’re both kind of in the wrong in certain ways. Roddy shouldn’t have went after Austin and then had an annoying guy who does impressions do his Stone Cold bit. In the aftermath, Piper came off as super nuts but that’s pretty normal for ole Hot Rod these days. Austin was wrong for using his power to shut down the whole podcast, I feel. However, Roddy Piper’s podcast was SUPER terrible and I have grown to not really like the guy. I have my problems with Austin and I think he handled it bad but Piper started it and then acted really ridiculous. Have a seat, pal.

    Steve Austin

    Joey:

I’ve only listened to a few Roddy Piper podcast episodes but he’s pretty bad at it between asking uncomfortable questions and not doing research on the subjects he asks about. That being said, Piper always comes off a nice enough guy and is the “old grandpa” in wrestling that you let get away with saying ridiculous things because he’s loveable.

Steve Austin did not see it that way. After hearing the podcast that offended Stone Cold, I would agree Piper went after him for no reason referring to Austin as a quitter who no-shows. Still, Austin should have just went after one episode instead of the entire podcast. You can’t use a power play to take away someone’s gig like that. Keep on rantin’ up a storm, Hot Rod.

    Roddy Piper

    Tom:

Just going by his Twitter account, Roddy sends off some very mixed messages about all this. Like, he claims that he’s not mad at Austin, but then he constantly RTs people slating Stone Cold. Austin seems like a broadly decent guy these days, albeit a little thin-skinned at times.

Ultimately, it’s a question of banter: Piper is delivering crazy old-man banter that most guys should be able to handle without too much issue. You can just dismiss it, you know? However, I think a lot of this mess is still on Piper’s shoulders – my understanding is that Podcast One removed the podcast at Stone Cold’s request, Piper blew up and quit to go to another podcast network, even though he’s contractually unable to. Does that sound right? Anyway, Roddy’s a crazy old man who does crazy old man things that people shouldn’t get upset about, but he’s also created a bunch of crazy old man problems for himself.
