WWE Battleground 2014 Preview and Predictions

This is a PPV that’s happening.

Giving their thoughts and predictions on what to expect from the PPV are members of the site @JoeySplashwater, @TimWelcomed and @TomBlargh.

Cameron vs. Naomi on the kick-off show

I have to be honest. I probably won’t even watch this match. Naomi is one of the most entertaining female in ring performers in the world right now but Cameron is easily one of the worst. In fact, she’s actually more awful than Naomi is good.

    Interest Level: 0/10
    Prediction: Naomi wins

Cameron is pretty hard to watch. Naomi is one of the best but I can’t do this to myself. Maybe Naomi can carry Cameron to something decent, though I doubt it. I also could not care less about them breaking up.

    Interest Level: 0/10
    Prediction: Naomi wins

TOTAL DIVAS’ FIFTH MOST INTERESTING DUO* EXPLODES AS CAMERON FINALLY SAYS ‘GIRL BYE’ TO NAOMI!!! It’s cool that there’s, like, three TV storylines involving Divas right now but this is probably the worst of them. I’m glad that Naomi’s ditching Cameron so she can do good things as a singles wrestler, so I guess this match is a necessary evil.

*The top four are as follows:

Naomi and Whichever Uso It Is That She’s Married To
    Nikki and Cena
    Brie and Bryan
    Cameron and Her Weirdo Boyfriend

    Interest Level: 1/10
Prediction: Naomi wins. Brad Ward tweets ‘Boy Bye’ again.

    Rusev vs. Jack Swagger

If you told me two months ago, I’d be excited for a Jack Swagger vs. Rusev match, I’d tell you that you were out of your mind. Amazing how much blind patriotism from a regressed fan base can do for a wrestling character. However, both guys have momentum and I’m interested to see how this plays out. I can see a DQ or count out finish to prolong this to Summerslam but I’m still gonna pick Rusev.

    Interest Level: 8/10
    Prediction: Rusev wins.

I have a lot of problems with the wayJack  Swagger and Zeb Colter are faces now without ever once really apologizing for their past. The racist group quits saying racist things aloud for a couple of promos? Other countries are bad? Let’s cheer these men! The crowd pops for Swagger now so I guess I have to deal with it. I like Rusev and Lana is amazing. I assume they’ll have to tone down the politics of the Russian group but we shall see.

I’m interested in Rusev matches but I don’t care about Swagger matches at all. Rusev has to win here to maintain momentum. This match has a lot of excitement around it but I think it’s been pretty poor in execution if you really look outside of the loud “yeah, America” cheap pops it’s been soliciting.

    Interest Level: 4/10
    Prediction: Rusev wins

It’ll be interesting to see how they handle Rusev after the tragedy earlier in the week – I’m guessing they might ease up on the Putin references a little, but otherwise, I’m hoping they carry on with their shtick.

Anyway, the match. Man, Swagger ain’t too hot, but Rusev has been pretty good fun in his last few PPV matches so I’m hoping it’ll stay the course of the last few shows – short, explosive and messy. Wait, that sounds completely gross and like I’m setting up for some kind of a terrible joke about ejaculation, but I’m NOT, honest.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: Rusev wins.

AJ Lee vs. Paige for the Divas Championship

I’m enjoying this Divas feud for the first time in a while. It’s kind of cool that fans are picking sides and it feels like a real rivalry which hasn’t happened for the WWE female wrestlers since Lita vs. Trish. I’m not a Paige fan yet and I enjoy AJ Lee much more so I’m hoping she gets the win but the feud continues. I doubt they’ll do another title change here so I’m leaning towards picking AJ Punk.

    Interest Level: 9/10
    Prediction: AJ Lee wins.

A diva’s feud I’m interested in! It hasn’t been enough but it’s definitely helped flesh out Paige’s character a little and AJ really is just great at her job. I think if we get a more aggressive Paige here this match could be great  I don’t think the feud needs to end here because it’s helping Paige so much. Keep it going until Summerslam!

    Interest Level: 8/10
    Prediction: AJ wins

Frenemies! They’re frenemies? Did you know they’re frenemies? Frenemies is a word that the kids are using! Paige, don’t forget to reference that you’re frenemies!

Anyway, lame buzzwords aside, this should be p. good. Like a few other matches on this show, it seems to be a placeholder to build things to the ‘real’ match that’ll happen at Summerslam so I’m guessing there will be some manner of fuckery happening before the finish.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: AJ wins.

    Sexy Wrestler of The Week

Come one. Come all. It is time to name The Sexy Wrestler of The Week!

Let me tell you all something. I had to postpone this for two extra days because the incredible and overwhelming amount of votes that came in this time around. I just could not count them all. So after hiring some help from V0te C0unterz Inc., a service specializing in professional vote counting out of North Carolina, the results are finally in!

What made this fun for me is that I didn’t even know who the winner as until today when the two contracted vote-counters showed me who won out of their specific piles of votes. I didn’t even see one vote for this person in my stack of votes! Democracy is often surprising like this. That’s why it is so dang cool and legit.

    Jeff Hardy SWOTW

There it is! Jeff Hardy is your Sexy Wrestler of The Week. This is his first win. My helpers this week, Bert and Glenn said it was probably because people “think his face paint is dope” or “maybe they feel they owe him something.” I think it is just because our voters are good people and can find the sexy in anyone.

One final thank you to Bert and Glenn from V0te C0unterz Inc. They were very adamant about doing their job fast and precise for you, the voters. They even put sugar on their nose when they felt sleepy and carried around light bulbs in case they were forced to count in the dark! That’s dedication. I’ll definitely be using their services again.

The Official Mid-Year Spin Cycle OBSERVING Awards

TNA’s Spin Cycle airs on Xplosion in the UK and is uploaded to the YouTube channel. It’s amazing. You have to watch it.

Since we’re halfway through the year and I’ve been OBSERVING the Spin Cycle, I felt it was only right to deliver some mid-year OBSERVING Awards. Be sure to watch all the latest editions of the Spin Cycle over at TNA’s YouTube channel.

Most Outstanding Panel Member: Rockstar Spud

The work rate or rate of work that Spud gives you is just too much. From a great feud with Sanada to stellar outfits to beautiful drawings to his war on selfies, Rockstar Spud’s body of work gave him the crown.

Biggest box office draw-ing: “Dixie Carter” by Rockstar Spud

    Magnificent artwork by Spud.

Feud of the (Mid)Year: Robbie E vs. Ethan Carter III

After months of hatred and hostility, EC3 and Robbie finally hashed it out in the Spin Cycle intervention. It gave us an ending as satisfying as Hogan vs. Rock at Wrestlemania 18.

    Dirt Sheet History: September 2006

Take a trip back to a memorable timeline in sports entertainment with the most important stories reported as fact in the journalistic world of pro wrestling dirt sheets.

Following the timeline of the last Dirt Sheet History looking back at August 2006, we get a glimpse into the top scoops from September of 2006. Kurt Angle goes to TNA, wrestlers meet blogs, Batista’s sadness and much more.

Reminder that you can find all past editions of Dirt Sheet History looking at 2004 and 2005 right here at this very link. Now enjoy September 2006.

    * The #1 wrestler for this year’s PWI 500 has been revealed. The top spot came down to Samoa Joe and John Cena. The winner of the 2006 PWI 500 is John Cena. This is the first time in which he has been ranked number one in the annual special edition magazine.

    * Just to add more to the previously reported return of Chris Benoit. Benoit is currently scheduled to return on 9/9 at the West Palm Beach House Show. Originally Benoit was scheduled to return and go against Mark Henry, but Henry is now also out with injuries and is not expected to return anytime in the near future. There was also talk that Benoit may have been upset with the way his match at One Night Stand II was handled. There was talks of a Benoit vs Malenko (Dean) match that was scheduled to take place, but never came about after it was decided this PPV would be the launch of an all new ECW Brand.

Benoit also need some time off to heal up some nagging injuries and he also wanted to take care of his wife who was recovering from surgery herself. It is not known when Benoit will show up on television.

    * This week on RAW, a vignette aired for a new tag team headed to the RAW brand – Cryme Tyme.

Cryme Tyme members Shad Gaspard and JTG are straight out of a 50 Cent video – with iced out grills, bling and bulletproof vests. In the segment, they were training for their big RAW debut by timing how long it took for them to rob a smoothie store. After attacking the cashier, taking the money from the cash register and talking into the security monitor – the two realized they were 3 seconds over their limit. They decided to rob another store to improve on their quickness.

WWE posted the following statement on WWE.com:

“Tonight a new tag team, Cryme Tyme, will be introduced to the RAW audience. In an effort to humor and entertain our fans the tag team known as Cryme Tyme will be parodying racial stereotypes.

Shad Gaspard and JTG do outlandish, outrageous “stunts” to ready themselves for tag team action on RAW. This attempt at Saturday Night Live-like humor is bound to entertain audiences of all ethnic derivations.

We hope you enjoy the weekly adventures of Cryme Tyme.”

    * Former mid-to-late 90’s WWF star Henry O. Godwin could be making a return to WWE. He defeated WWE Cruiserweight champion Gregory Helms in a non-title match at a Smackdown brand house show on Sunday night.

    * The Great Khali has been suspended from his job in India as an assistant sub-inspector with Punjab Armed Police (PAP), according to IndiaENews.com. Of course this is because he hasn’t reported to work because he’s been working for WWE, but there’s no way you can’t find this humorous.

    * Lots of talk behind one of the reasons that John Cena may move to Smackdown is because of the amount of time he will miss while out publicizing his upcoming film, “The Marine”. WWE may prefer a “Smackdown” guy be out of action opposed to a “RAW” guy. I think at this point, most people are preparing themselves for Cena to be moved.

    * There is some heat on Triple H for taking a shot at the ECW entity on Tuesday night. Upon entering the building at the beginning of the show, he said “Bingo!” ECW’s original home, the ECW arena, held midnight bingo during its heyday. There is heat on Triple H for saying it because there was no storyline point in doing so. It is believed that he made the comment because his wife Stephanie McMahon is not a fan of the ECW project. Some in WWE say Stephanie has been politicing once again to get Paul Heyman demoted.

This Or That: Tag Teams Edition (7/15/2014)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlargh will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

    More annoying chant?

    WHAT? – 64%, CM Punk – 36%

    Cooler faction?

    Bullet Club – 51%, NWO – 49%

    Better promotion?

    CHIKARA – 81%, CZW – 19%

    What should LeBron James do?

Go back to Cleveland– 81%, Stay in Miami – 19%

Last week’s This Or That broke a record for most votes collected in a week. Thank you and keep voting!

Better bad-ass tag team: The Road Warriors or The Steiner Brothers?

Which bad-ass tag team do you prefer?

The Road Warriors had a good look and bad-ass personas at the time but in-ring I didn’t care too much and still don’t. I love Steiner Brothers matches and will say they’re higher up in my imaginary “favorite tag-teams of all time” list. Scott Steiner was always a fun watch and how could you not like a wrestler named The Dog-Faced Gremlin?! That’s way better than “Hawk” or “Animal.”

    The Steiner Brothers

The Steiner Brothers are my favorite ’90s tag team and I’m basically using this question to showcase my love for them. That’s what happens when you purchase a domain name, kids! The Steiners had everything I loved about wrestling. From brawling with intensity to flashy moves from the top rope, Rick and Scott gave us both the appeal of intense brawls and impressive wrestling bouts.

I enjoyed The Road Warriors/LOD enough but they never really connected with me probably due to the fact that I missed their prime and I don’t believe you can truly understand how good a wrestler was unless you live through it. I do vividly remember marking out when The Steiners beat the NWO for the tag team titles at Souled Out 1997. One of my favorite things about the WWE Network (when it actually works for me) is reliving old Steiners tag matches. Best tag team of all time!

    The Steiners

I missed out on the peak years of Los Bros Steiner so I don’t really have an awful lot of affection for them, although watching young Scott in his early years and seeing if you can spot any Big Poppa Pumpisms is pretty good fun. Oh, and I enjoyed seeing the Steiners get hit with trays of snacks by Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton dressed as concession sellers in the WCW Comic (RIP WCW Comic Book Reading Club, you were too much work and not consistently funny enough).

I wasn’t a huge Road Warriors/Legion of Doom guy either, but I did like the shoulder pads, facepaint and how creative they were with using their hairstyles to hide their bald patches.

    The Road Warriors

    Dirt Sheet History: August 2006

Take a trip back to a memorable timeline in sports entertainment with the most important stories reported as fact in the journalistic world of pro wrestling dirt sheets.

Following the timeline of the last Dirt Sheet History looking back at July 2006, we get a glimpse into the top scoops from August of 2006. An action packed month of news featuring an infamous ECW TV taping, CM Punk’s WWE debut, returns, departures, power struggles and Triple H responding to his internet haters, this one is especially a must read.

Reminder that you can find all editions of Dirt Sheet History looking at 2004 and 2005 right here at this very link. Now enjoy August 2006!

    * Jerry Lawler and Terry Funk will face one another on 9/16 in Lawton, Oklahoma in an Impact Wrestling Zone Extreme Rules match. No association with TNA or ECW.

    * John Permaul sent in the following:

I just got back from ECW on SciFi from the Hammerstein Ballroom. Here’s a few notes I wanted to pass along. The fans really made tonight’s show. There were 4 dark matches:

    1. Rene Dupree vs. Balls Mahoney: I was quite surprised (along with everyone else) when Dupree’s music played. The fans were solely behind Mahoney, but these two put on a really good match. Mahoney was able to get the win.

    2. FBI vs. Smackdown’s Brian Kendrick and Paul London: The Smackdown champs were booed. The FBI’s Nunzio looked like he had an injury coming into the match, but this was a very solid tag match. One thing I always wondered was if WWE was going to make ECW Tag Team titles. FBI vs. Kendrick/London reminded me of FBI vs. Tajiri/Super Crazy from One Night Stand 2006…this was simply a great match. I really wish this match could have aired on television. The Smackdown champs picked up the victory.

    3. Roadkill vs. Stevie Richards: Another good match. Roadkill teased the fans at one point, going to the top rope, and then when the fans started cheering, he got off the top turnbuckle. Great back and forth action. Richards was able to pick up the victory.

    4. CW Anderson vs. Shannon Moore: The fans were behind CW. Many chanted for Moore to “not come back”. Anderson was able to pick up the victory, but then after the match Moore got on the microphone and stated how he was not doing it for the fans, but doing it for himself to prove he’s the best cruiserweight in the world.

Next they played a WWE Divas video, and then Tazz and Joey Styles made their way to the announcers desk.

I’m not sure how everything came across on tv, but the NYC fans never cease to amaze me. If you remember that sign that said “If Cena Wins, We Riot” hanging off the balcony at One Night Stand 2006, this time around security did not let ANYTHING be hung from the balcony. That worked against me since I wanted to hang a sign that says “Bring ECW Here Every Week”.

At the start of the Big Show/Batista match, when the ring announcer goes to introduce the two of them, there was a roll of toilet paper that was thrown into the ring, and then it bounced out and rolled outside…that was me and my bad aim. It didn’t unravel like it was supposed to.

The fans hated the main event. I believe there was a commercial break during that match. During that commercial break all Big Show did was stand outside the ring and Batista just stood inside the ring…nothing else. The fans thought that this was an extreme rules match, but when the match ended with a DQ, the fans were just happy that this match was finally over.

Post Show: After the show went off the air, Sabu stood at the entrance way, and then left. Big Show and Batista then went into the ring once more, did a faceoff, and then shook hands. Batista then went around the ring, high fiving fans and then left. Big Show did the same, but then got into a battle of words with a few fans. One fan took offense and then tried to jump the guard rail, but then security quickly moved in and took him down. It was quite a scene.
