WWE Payback 2014 Preview and Predictions

Not to be confused with that Mel Gibson movie.

Giving their thoughts and predictions on what to expect from the PPV are members of the site @JoeySplashwater, @TimWelcomed and @TomBlackett.

El Torito vs. Hornswoggle in a Mask vs. Hair match on the pre show

This was superbly fun last PPV pre-show with the TLC match but the act has started to get stale and Hornswoggle getting his shaved is unlikely to be as fun as everyone jumping through tables.

    Interest Level: 4/10
    Prediction: El Torito wins.

I’m down for this. It’s time to end the feud and nothing ends a feud better than someone getting a haircut. The WeeLC was a show-stealer so hopefully they can have some fun in a regular one-on-one environment. If El Torito wins this I demand he gets brought into the US Title scene AT LEAST.

    Interest Level: 7/10
    Prediction: El Torito wins.

Yes please! I’d be happy to see a mini other than Hornswoggle involved, but last month’s WeeLC was incredible and I’m a mark for any match involving a haircut (with the prime example being X-Pac vs. Jeff Jarrett from Summerslam ’98). Will Drew McIntyre put himself through a table again? God, I hope so.

    Interest Level: 7/10
Prediction: El Torito wins, Hornswoggle gets his head shaved and the announcers overreact in a fairly annoying way.

    Daniel Bryan/Brie Bella/Stephanie McMahon showdown

Daniel Bryan is by far the best wrestler in the world right now. Stephanie is by far the best heel authority figure in wrestling right now. This should be more riveting but Brie Bella’s atrocious acting and Kane just being around sucks the life out of it. I think Bryan will give up the title to spare his wife’s job but Kane will still beat him up and likely tombstone Brie.

    Interest Level: 4/10
Prediction: Daniel Bryan relinquishes the title.

Eh. I’m not big on talking segments on PPVs but if the title actually gets vacated then I feel this is the place to do it. I’m not expecting this to be entertaining at all but maybe Bryan can pull out an emotional performance and maybe Brie’s acting will be minimized. Plus, I’m incredibly sad that this is where we are at after Wrestlemania.

    Interest Level: 2/10
Prediction: Daniel Bryan vacates the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

Ooph, no thanks. I think Stephanie McMahon has been frequently great in her role, but I’m not sure that this will do anyone any favours. Raw-style segments on PPV (or whatever we call PPVs in this post-Network age) are always a bit jarring so I could do without this.

    Interest Level: 3/10
Prediction: Brie ‘cries’, Bryan acts uncharacteristically misogynistic towards Stephanie and then gives up the title. The crowd chants for CM Punk who posts some boring shit about hockey.

    Sexy Wrestler of The Week

Howdy. Sit back and enjoy the reveal of The Sexy Wrestler of The Week!

Here we are again and I will just come and out say it. What were you all thinking with this week’s vote winner? I had to recount three times to make sure I didn’t count them wrong. Whatever. Let’s just get to revealing it. I’m just very confused.

I found this picture of Hogan hanging out on the Raw set before he as even signed to come back. Oh, yeah… did I mention that YOU ALL MADE THIS HAPPEN. Hulk Hogan is The Sexy Wrestler of The Week. I never thought I would say this but… democracy has failed us.

    Dirt Sheet History: March 2006

Take a trip back to a memorable timeline in sports entertainment with the most important stories reported as fact in the journalistic world of pro wrestling dirt sheets.

Following the timeline of the last Dirt Sheet History looking back at February 2006, we get a glimpse into the top scoops from March 2006. The road to Wrestlemania 22 is here as are many scoops. Reminder that you can find all editions of Dirt Sheet History looking at 2004 and 2005 right here at this very link. Now enjoy March 2006!

    * As previously reported, WWE released Marty Jannetty on Friday. There was speculation that this was part of an angle. Jannetty was scheduled to appear on this Monday’s RAW in Birmingham, AL, but somehow he screwed up and upset WWE. He is not expected back and the angle involving him for RAW has been scrap. Jannetty was brought in for the Shawn Michaels/McMahon angle. Some sources say he couldn’t appear due to travel restrictions he has as part of a probation agreement that WWE was not aware of.

    * Vince McMahon has come up with a plan to help John Cena‘s support from the fans. The philosophy he has come up with will address Cena’s limited in-ring performance. McMahon was behind the idea of having Triple H verbally attacking Cena’s in-ring ability. He has come to realize that he can no longer ignore the crowds dislike for Cena. There will be more promos criticizing Cena as a bad in-ring performer over the next several weeks.

Before McMahon came to realization that it would be best to not ignore the crowds response, management were committed to protecting Cena’s image due to the long-term plan of keeping him as a credible opponent for Triple H and because he plays the off-air role of a champion very well.

    * In an unprecedented sign of admitted failure, WWE has scrapped the entire Juniors division and fired all of the talent from the division. All 6 Juniors under contract have been released.

    * In a recent interview Hulk Hogan said John Cena is the man to carry pro wrestling for the next 15-20 years.

Seven Things: 7 Takeaways From The ROH/NJPW Shows

Welcome to Seven Things, a list that will run weekly and consist of very eclectic topics. These are of my opinions and doesn’t express the views of others on WrestlingOnEarth.

Let’s take a look at some things I took away from the ROH/NJPW joint shows in Canada and New York.

Reminder: If you have any suggestions for future lists, feel free to share them in the comments or send them to me on Twitter: @JoeySplashwater.

    7. Tag team wrestling is alive and well.

The two shows gave you so many great tag teams led by The Young Bucks having arguably the best match on each show. reDRagon cemented themselves as one of and in my opinion, the best tag team in wrestling right now. Another one of my favorites The Time Splitters (Alex Shelley and KUSHIDA) made their ROH debut and looked fantastic. The Briscoes, Bullet Club and Forever Hooligans also made their presences felt and are in the top tier of tag teams right now.

The Marvel spoof post show credits scene after War of the Worlds saw Christopher Daniels announce his return to Ring of Honor with Kazarian so another top tier tag team is freed from the shackles of TNA and should make for some interesting matches. For those who love tag team wrestling, the genre of wrestling is alive as can be right now. If The Young Bucks and Bad Influence can be on shows consistently enough and the team of Hanson & Rowe mature, this could be the best tag team roster ROH has had since 2008.

    Dirt Sheet History: February 2006

    * Spike TV will be making an announcement regarding TNA iMPACT! new slot. The show will be moving to a Thursday night primetime slot. The show will air from 8-9PM EST, followed by two hours of UFC.

TNA iMPACT! scored its highest rating last week when Sting made his first appearance on national television since the ending of WCW. The show received a 1.1 rating. It was watched by 1.3 million viewers, and posted a 1.0 in both young male demographics (18-34 and 18-49).

    * A booth attendant at a Boca tanning salon has told cops that she was groped by someone she identified as World Wrestling Entertainment boss Vince McMahon, according to two Boca Raton police sources.

In a report expected to be made public this week, an attendant at Tanzabar on North Federal Highway claims McMahon, 60, came in for a routine tanning session late Sunday night. But things got a little weird.

“The alleged victim says Mr. McMahon first showed pictures of himself naked on his cellphone,” said one source, who saw the report. “Then she says he made unwelcome advances and finally cornered her in a tanning booth and groped her.”

Calls left for Tanzabar owner Amy Murray were not returned. An attendant at the salon said she couldn’t comment on the incident.

McMahon, who starred in a wrestling show Monday night, has been a longtime Boca resident. He lives with wife Linda at The Excelsior on South Ocean Boulevard. Apartments there fetch in the $6 million range.

McMahon couldn’t be reached. But, at home in Boca, Linda called the allegations “totally bizarre.” His daughter, Stephanie, also a star of wrestling specials, confirmed her dad goes to Tanzabar.

“Yeah, he was there the other night,” she said. “I’m not aware something happened.”

The tanning attendant’s name is being withheld until police investigate further and classify the nature of the alleged incident.

    * WWE has already begun laying out the framework for their second ECW One Night Stand PPV on June 10, 2006. Discussions on what venue they will use have included returning to the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, where the show was held last year or moving it to somewhere in Philadelphia, PA. It is unlikely that they will go to the ECW Arena due to the fact that it looks nothing like it did due to recent renovations.

Both Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko have expressed interest into working a match for the show, as Malenko was unable to work last year due to his wife scheduled to give birth the day of the show. If the match occurs it will be done as an Eddie Guerrero tribute match.

    Sexy Wrestler of The Week

Get ready because it’s time to name The Sexy Wrestler of The Week! There are fun times ahead. You know that.

Oh, hello. I didn’t see you there. I was just finishing counting your votes for this week. It’s what I do. It’s a lot of hard work but it’s the price I pay so that you can all have a voice. It is essential that we rate people on their looks at least once a week. There’s nothing wrong with that at all.

I would like to mention that this week’s winner is simply fantastic and that all of you who voted did a very good job at saying “hey this person looks better than other people.” You are really cool and are filling your time with important decision-making.

Wow! Adam Cole has been voted The Sexy Wrestler of The Week again! He took a long hiatus after a year of domination but has reached the top spot yet again. Could we see another streak? I doubt it but be sure to vote and come back next week!

    This Or That (5/20/2014)

Everybody loves binary decisions, especially wrestling fans! In This Or That, we’ve forced ourselves to choose between two options that relate to wrestling.

Over four questions, @TimWelcomed, @JoeySplashwater and @TomBlackett will have to choose one of two options and give their reasoning on each of their choices. You can then vote on which one you’d choose, giving you the false impression that you’re somehow involved and we care about your opinion chance to join the conversation!

Before we start, here’s last week‘s results:

More likely to be the next WWE champ?

    The field – 56%, John Cena – 44%

Who will step up more in Daniel Bryan’s absence?

    Cody Rhodes – 65%, Dolph Ziggler – 35%

    More valuable free agent?

    Prince Devitt – 69%, Bad Influence – 31%

    Better small meal?

    Sandwiches – 58%, Soup – 42%

If his estimated in ring return date is Summerslam, should Daniel Bryan be stripped of the WWE title: YES or NO?

    Should he?

I think if this ends up being the case they could easily go the interim champion route or just set it up so that when he comes back he can say he is the real WWE World Heavyweight Champion. That would only be three PPVs without him. It would be a great way for him to return and it would be an easy PPV match set-up.

With the WWE Network, you are basically punting on a large number of traditional PPV buys so the emphasis on Payback and Money In The Bank to be amazing are not as great as many would think. From a storyline point of view, you can have Kane run Bryan off next week and steal the titles, going around proclaiming himself champion despite Bryan being the recognized title holder. Summerslam, we see the blow off to the feud and Bryan never “loses” the championship.

Bryan holding onto the championship while he can’t defend it won’t do him any favours. It sucks that it has to happen, but nothing would be dumber than having a ‘fighting champion’ who can’t fight. Interim champions are the dirt worst, so none of that, please.

I’ll admit that seeing him just hand over the belt to Stephanie or whoever will be a bummer, but fuck it, he can do it in a way that still makes him seem defiant and firey. Like, he can throw it in a river or something, that usually works.

Anyway, rather than messing around with two belts or an interim champ, I think just taking it off him with the guarantee he’ll get a title match once he’s back is the best way option. Ideally, we’ll get a fun tournament to decide the new champ and then a great Bryan return at Summerslam to reset things.
